Democracy Prep is a warm collaborative environment that blends the right amount of structure (providing a clear framework for leaders) and autonomy. I feel valued and respected as a leader who has original ideas and knows her school context best.

Cons

The level of urgency is high. It is an intense place to work. We put in long hours and we are constantly looking at data and asking ourselves what we could do better in service of kids.

Pros

Strong, mission-driven culture attracts lots of smart, hard-working, passionate people. Lot of systems (tech, HR, finance) work well. Schools have a fair amount of autonomy, with meaningful attempts at collaboration and shared services.

Cons

Growth outpaces staffing, and there is little redundancy for key roles - work / life balance can be hard to achieve, and there is a strictness around arbitrary policies that gets in the way of results. Vision is vague. In general, not enough transparency or innovation.
