Pros

I'm dismayed by some of these other reviews. Yes, Democracy Prep has long hours, and yes we could be more structured, but if you've taught in a low-performing school it's hard not to realize how much of an improvement Democracy Prep is to the status quo. 1. Hard-working teachers 2. Supportive administration 3. Warm-firm balance to student culture creates environments that are happy for students and adults, even when the hours are long. 4. Good pay and benefit AND MOST IMPORTANTLY STUDENTS ARE LEARNING!! I'm a middle school teacher, and just today found out that one of our graduating seniors was accepted into Dartmouth, and another Princeton. Obviously not all of our kids will go to Ivy Leagues, but they don't all need to. As a MS teacher, what I do know is that all of my students will go to a high school where the teachers care, where the environment is supportive, and where they will continue to succeed. I know my hard work won't go to waste. I know the long hours will continue to be worth it. I see the students at my school learning in my classes. I see them scoring well on tests. I see them loving our technology class, our flag football team, and our music program. I see them going on field trips to DC and Canada (and I get jealous that I don't get to chaperone the HS trips to Ecuador and South Korea). I see motivated adults, students, and parents. I see learning happening, and I see kids loving it. Democracy Prep is not perfect, but if you care about helping kids be successful in school and embrace learning, this is a good environment.

Cons

Our hours/school day are long. We do some planning on the fly which means things aren't always as structured as they should be.

Pros

The Staff - by far the best staff I have ever worked with. They are smart, incredibly talented individuals that aren't afraid to go the extra mile. I enjoy working with them during the day and hanging out over the weekend. Everyone is super close and supportive! The mission - I have worked at places were the mission is something that is written on one of the wall's of the school. Democracy Prep is different in that they hold students and staff to the expectations of the mission. Civic engagement and getting kids to the college of their choice truly is happening at this school. The trips - Students in 6th grade go to DC, 7th Boston, 8th Canada 9th London 10th Ecuador 11th South Korea and 12th South Africa. If you are teaching one of those grades there is a chance you will get to go with as a chaperone.

Cons

Its hard work. If you are looking for a job that is 8-5 and you can forget about when you leave work, not the place for you!

Pros

- Culture: I absolutely love my coworkers. Team oriented, easy to collaborate, & we laugh while we do it. Keeps the energy high at our school. - Mission: College bound & active citizenship. - Scholars: Incredibly hardworking. They are, of course middle schoolers so they can be sassy at times, but they are also respectful and witty. It's great to see them develop their sense of responsibility and accountability. - Feedback: Before DP, I never had an admin or anyone observe my classroom and it made me feel very apathetic towards the US education system. I was a good teacher but I never thought I could become a great master teacher. At DP, I feel invigorated everyday by the challenge of becoming the best teacher. My principal & colleagues frequently observe me & then we meet 1-1 to discuss the feedback. I love the actionable feedback and the practice. There are network materials that are also shared among all the DP middle schools which makes planning and determining rigor easier. I have learned at DP what it means to be an effective teacher. - Structure/High Expectations: I LOVE that my team is on the same page but that our classrooms are still unique to our personalities.

Cons

Balancing work and life but it has really pushed me to be better with my time. Additionally, it's gratifying to know that the hard work is paying off when I see how much my scholars have grown socially & academically.
