Not a job for CNA"S

Pros

Some of the pros for working here is that Duke look good on your resume, hard work but you like the job that you do. Meet people from all over the world, etc.

Cons

Working as a CNA duke does not have many chances are opportunities for the skill level. The highest you can go is CNA II or HUC. Duke will find a way for you to do both jobs, and still, get paid less. The place is full with too many chiefs and not enough Indians. I have seen nurses getting a pay raise up to nine percent, while the NA's only get a two percent raise. The work is tough, when I was working at UNC we had at least four to five NA's to staff a thirty patient workload. Working for Duke on some floors, there is two NA's with sixteen patient apiece. To me, that is modern-day slavery. Most of the floor nurses are lazy, and seem to be unskilled. To me, most of the nurses have the "I know it all because I have gone to school" attitude. Watch out for the clicks and the unit. Most Nurse Managers are biased and will take sides. To me, the only place where NA's can go is the float pool, where you don't have to deal with so much on the floor staffing and the headache. For all my years of experience, all I get paid is $13.76 an hour.

RN (new grad)

Pros

The name gets attention on a resume later on. Good, comprehensive new grad training on the unit where I worked.

Cons

Yikes! If this were my first foray into the working world, I might have stayed here longer. But with some work experience and the savvy to look around, you notice quickly that the pay is terrible (even compared to other hospitals in this low-paying region for RNs); I started at $20.75 and would probably be making around $23ish base if I had stayed there for 2-3 years...inhumane rotating day/night shifts are common on inpatient units...ZERO employer contribution to a 401(k) unless you're in management or another salaried position, which is just stingy. And of course hospital nursing is difficult and sometimes dangerous work. Health insurance is reasonable - perfectly decent, I'd say, but not extraordinary, and not enough to compensate for the very real risk of getting hurt by a patient where I worked in the ED. Working conditions and management vary widely, of course, depending on your unit. But the institution overall is banking on the fancy name to attract nurses. The low pay must offset the high turnover in their business model. In the Emergency Dept, around 30% of the RN staff turned over in less than a year - people left for UNC, the VA, Rex, or back to their home cities as soon as they were able. I got to see a lot of interesting stuff, and I met great people, but overall I wish I would've looked elsewhere to start my nursing career.

Poor work/life balance and culture

Pros

There are a lot of smart hard working employees at DHTS. I learned a lot from my coworkers and I wish them the best moving forward.

Cons

The employees are over worked and under appreciated. Many employees are dissatisfied, but the only voice they have is their feet (when they leave). If I could give a fraction of one star for work/life balance and culture, I would. Making things worse, "leadership" from severeal directors and senior executives is simply a word they call their versions of micromanagement or executive bullying.
