Pros

Great compensation, certain departments seem to be above the political issues (namely the creative teams). Fantastic product.

Cons

sadly although the founders are solid, humble, brilliant people they did not realize what they were up against when they hired a management team that saw a financial opportunity and a couple of guys who were too inexperienced with business to understand how to protect their original business model. A lot of employees there are not socially astute enough to see the political manipulation that is happening although many are. If money is the most important thing to you and you don't mind playing mental chess then this will likely be a fantastic fit, it's a great opportunity for people who don't mind manipulating others to their own advantage.

Thank you for sharing this, especially as a former teammate. It means a lot to me that you still care enough about Duo to speak out about your experience here, even if our other channels for feedback have failed you (including directly to me). I am proud of the team and the culture we've built at Duo, and dedicated to ensuring we lead with our values everyday. I'd appreciate the opportunity to hear more from you in confidence, if you'd be open to it.

Pros

Duo was a great place to work for the time I was there. I was one of the first hires after the Cisco acquisition and it was a great move for me. The people are kind, everyone (for the most part) works together well, and there is a huge focus on learning together. The work/life balance is good and they really focus on your well-being outside of work. If you are looking for a stable job, Duo is a great place to work. I see no chance of layoffs in the future and projects/priorities are rather consistent. I was on 3 different teams and all worked similarly - projects were planned well in advance and there was always a backlog to pick from. Depending on where you live, the compensation for each level is pretty good. It was one of the higher paying companies in my area. RSUs ended up making about 30% of my total compensation, which I didn't love, but wasn't bad either.

Cons

The smaller cons of working at Duo included - huge pushbacks in changing design patterns, often using the "it's too hard for people to switch/learn" excuse even for simple changes, which I don't agree with - dated technology internally (it's getting better) - some small amounts of security theater, like a hard lockdown on slack integrations/webhooks and productivity tools - now they only do annual review cycles - when I left, I pushed my new start date off 3 weeks to get stock on the day I was told they would be deposited, but they were mistaken and I missed out on ~5k in stock. Still pretty salty about that one. Now, the big one that was the deal breaker for me... TLDR: If you have the ambition and aptitude to move quickly in your career, Duo is not the place for you. I was given excuses multiple times that never lined up and this was the ultimate reason for me leaving. I waited a month after I left to write this review as I didn't leave under the best circumstances, and wanted to make sure my thoughts/feelings were valid. As I mentioned in the Pros, it's a stable place to work. However, you have to be pretty content with where you're at in your career to stay at Duo for a long period. Most of the recent departures that I had heard of were all due to lack of recognition/promotion (including mine). To give a bit more context, I was hired in as a Software Engineer II. From early on, I was told I probably should have been hired at level III, since Duo was still operating under the "higher low and promote quick if needed" mentality of a startup. The acquisition made this difficult. When it came time for the "focal" review period, I was told I was hired too soon to get a promotion. The next year, I was told there was no budget. My manager was great and sought out an open position internally at SEIII, which I applied for and was hired onto that team. I didn't want to move teams necessarily, but that's what it took to get the promotion, so I did it. Now later on, I was going for the SE IV (senior) position. After doing a gap analysis on what they expect a IV to achieve and showing I was ready, I was told it was too close to my last promotion. I did some digging and found there was no rule about that, to which management replied there was no budget. A month later, Duo had it's largest cycle of promotions yet. And on confrontation about that, management told me it was because I lacked the technical expertise for an SE IV, even though I had done a gap analysis and was being sought out in several areas for expertise. All that said, the biggest con of working at Duo is the difficulty in moving up. Recognition is not well managed and is often results in losing employees.

Pros

A bunch of unnecessary free gifts, free LaCroix, you can also tell people you work at Duo.

Cons

I worked in the ISS department and the management is a joke. Managers would make inappropriate sexual jokes, mock religious beliefs, not show up to meetings, and give unreasonable deadlines. Like being told on Friday afternoon something needed to be done by Monday. There is no training or job-specific onboarding at all. I was given a google doc and was essentially on my own. Unless you wanted to drink and play ping pong in the basement all day you got short shafted. Your best bet for promotion in this place is to be a "bro". Yet other teams like the poor folks doing Salesforce have to work mandatory overtime and have been doing that for the better part of a year due to yet again the failings of management. I'm not talking 5 or 10 hours either, 20 plus. (I heard that exact number from 3 of the developers I was friends with on that team).

As the leader of the ISS department, I am personally disappointed to read this but appreciate the candid feedback and am committed to learning more as your description does not reflect our expectations of how we conduct ourselves at Duo. Period. More specifically, some of your comments regarding your experience with managers on the team are things that I am hearing for the first time and would welcome learning more about. While you are no longer with the organization, I would appreciate the opportunity to connect with you directly, and can assure you this will be taken forward with our department leadership team.
