Working for an international non-profit

Cons

- President will make you work twelve hours a day, seven days a week to prepare for a large event while she goes on vacation....and then take credit for your work - Completely unprofessional working environment - Nonexistent goals, plans, metrics, outcomes - Upper management has high expectations but do not tell you what those expectations are - Zero transparency - High staff turnover - Unproductive board

Pros

Earth Day Network is the reason I have gotten where I have in my career. I was there for eight years and through the experiences I've had, people I've met and things I've learned--I can honestly say I am a better person for it both personally and professionally. They gave me the opportunity to learn and to grow and for that I am forever grateful. The management stuck with me through the good times and the bad times and I with them. They work hard and have devoted so much of their lives to running this organization and to the environmental movement.

Cons

I don't have anything bad to say.

Disaster of an organization

Pros

EDN's reputation from past decades allows it to continue bring in excellent employees, who truly want to do good work. Below senior management there are great people here (usually for only a few months at a time). EDN occasionally gives them useful connections at other organizations, which can help for their post-EDN lives.

Cons

Not enough room to list them here. Most damagingly, senior management operates on a culture of fear and intimidation, and has zero attachment to any employees or their well-being. They appear to have no conception of what is achievable from any given employee or with a given amount of money/time, all of which leads to unrealistic expectations of 70+ hour work weeks and being on call 24/7. Apart from this, they have no discernible strategy or vision for the organization, or identified tactics to achieve their goals. They've lost nearly all credibility with both funders and partners in the environmental movement, and have no clear path out of this black hole under current leadership. EDN has literally become a joke in most NGO circles.
