Do Not Apply to Work Here It Should Be Shut Down

Pros

Wonderful students and teaching staff. Also competitive salary.

Cons

I don’t know one teacher who enjoys working here or isn’t trying to actively leave. Leadership is incompetent, micromanaging, and out of touch with the student body. IEPs are written on ChatGPT, students with extra time or in need of extra services go months without them, and blame is always put on the teachers. Horrible retention rate and no safety for teachers or students. They are focused on renewing the charter and everything and everyone is a number for them so they can renew the charter. Equity is at the bottom of their decision making process as a result of this. Students actively dislike the new leadership as well as parents and consistently voice this to teachers who are put in uncomfortable positions. There are many leaders without licenses or any degree in education. There is a clear resentment between staff and leadership and a horrible morale in all the school buildings. The leaders are petty cowards with limited leadership experience and a holier than thou attitude. There is little time to prep and an extreme amount of time given to PDs that do not offer any practical help and take away from important teacher planning. The community would be better off if this charter did not get renewed instead of pretending to offer something better and fooling the community. The local public schools have consistently much better test scores.

Embarrassingly inept leadership

Recommend

Pros

The kids are good, the salary is competitive, there are usually enough basic supplies.

Cons

Toxic work environment. Leadership at the high school is embarrassingly out of touch. Since they don't do their own jobs they spend their time micromanaging their staff. Culture is non-existent, the kids have no respect for leadership, and no one with any power has taught a class in years. CEO and CAO are equally out of touch.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re glad to hear that you found the students rewarding to work with and appreciated the competitive salary. We also want to acknowledge the concerns you've raised. Leadership is currently taking active steps to analyze teacher feedback more deeply and with greater consistency. We recognize that listening is only the first step. It’s just as important that our staff feel heard and see meaningful change as a result. Our goal is to build a school culture where all staff feel supported, respected, and empowered. Thank you again for your input! Thank you, East Harlem Tutorial Program
