Pros

This was once a great place to work. Great people, wonderful flexibility to make up for dismal pay, and supervisors that actually cared about the concerns and welfare for teachers.

Cons

The "Policy of the Week" game is getting old. The target is always moving for the so-called sake of equity. It's never really equitable because as teachers we don't teach the same loads, have the same groups of students or are asked to have the same state/subject certs. So many teachers were hired on during Covid that never learned how to scale up operations. If anything they have scaled back the number of managers that are in place and created a system that's so micromanage that it makes all of the teachers miserable. And I use the term "teacher" very loosely because when passing rate, completion rate and satisfaction rate are your measures for success, do we even care about educating.

Pros

flexible, work from home, teach kids across the country

Cons

Last year this was a dream job. They had a weird setup in that you don't actually teach your students and you never really see or meet "your" students. But it was ok pay...which working from home was good. However, this year turned crazy. They let a big group of teachers go the week before school started this year due to lower than expected enrollments. I felt awful about this. I understand it's the business world, but these teachers would have been able to get teaching jobs easily in the Spring or Summer. They waited until the week before school started to tell these teachers they didn't have a job. Throughout the first 2 months this school year, we just randomly had teachers disappear and didn't know what happened to them...no opportunity to say bye or anything. Then, it was my turn. Received an email that said "catch up - update" and was in a group of another 30 something teachers that were told mid-week that we no longer had a job. We had no opportunity to tell students bye. I can't imagine what students/parents thought when the teacher they got accustomed to was just gone the next day. I told my students, "See you tomorrow"...and never saw them again. I imagine they do this to keep you from letting them know you won't be back. Just super shady!!! These teachers did nothing wrong and developed relationships with their students. Our company access was cut off the next morning. They promote a "family" atmosphere and say they are "educator first"....maybe....until they no longer need you....or their bad practices cause them to lose all their enrollments. Definitely NOT "educator first". I would never work for this company again. Again - I understand if you have to let teachers go...but they led us on telling us they expected no further cuts....and then BAM! Never trust a for-profit education company -- that's what I learned!

Edmentum Response

We believe all students should have a positive learning experience, and as a result, we try to keep any disruptions to a minimum. Unfortunately, we had to reduce the number of online K-5 teachers based on changing enrollment trends among elementary school students. We encourage those teachers to apply for other roles within Edmentum.

Major potential, major burn-out

Pros

- Remote worker-friendly. Edmentum understands that talent can live anywhere. - Time off. 4 weeks of PTO after a year. Some managers support additional "off the record" comp time after hectic release periods. Company shuts down From Dec 24 to Jan 1. - C-suite is accessible and generally communicative. - Like many edtech companies, the vast majority of employees care deeply about educators and improving student outcomes. - Solid product portfolio with potential for greatness, given the right direction and investment.

Cons

- Resource starved. Staffing and automation of common processes has not scaled with the explosive growth triggered by COVID response. This will hopefully change with the new investment structure, but employee burn-out in the meantime is REAL. - Initiative fatigue. The CEO told the company in an all-hands meeting that "if you don't like change, get out", which isn't a bad mantra for edtech, but oh my goodness, does Edmentum change gears often and abruptly. What was touted as the New Hotness often disappears in the night a few months later. It is hard to keep up with is hot and what is not. - Too dependent on relationships over process and documentation. This leads to a rumor mill problem and an over-emphasis on loyalty over delivery.
