Pros

The check-out policy and employee discount are definitely the best things. Not to mention many people who work there will share similar interests and can be really laid back, down to earth people; even up to the store manager.

Cons

The heads of the company don't really seem to care one bit about who you are, you're just a number. The company also seems to support managers taking in blatantly stolen items just so they can match trade-ins from the previous year. Managers get pinged if they don't meet or exceed their numbers compared to the previous year. Managers also get pinged if they fire employees, so the company encourages managers not to fire bad employees. The amount of work you do for the store, even on the lower levels, is far more than what you get paid for. You're effectively forced into being a sales person, a customer service associate, a lost prevention manager and more all in one. The company doesn't support people who do a good job. If they do all of their tasks, but their reservation and subscription numbers aren't up to corporate minimums, the employee gets in trouble. That's no way to encourage hard work. I also want to note that the reservations and subscriptions are okay, but the reason employees push them is that they earn the company easy cash that they then use to line their pockets. GameStop employees are NOT commission based and certainly don't get paid enough. Overall GameStop is a fairly bad place to work. When people from Wal-Mart and McDonald's pity you, you know your company needs to be overhauled. If you aren't looking for some low paying, part-time job while you go to school or build SOME experience, then look passed GameStop. It won't reward you for hard work, you'll just get stuck there. One last thing; if you like people that work at your local GameStop, do try to support them. But if they ever go away, just leave GameStop behind.

Pros

You get real management experience fast. You can honestly say you handled: Inventory control Cash handling Customer conflict Sales goals Scheduling pressure Loss prevention Store operations Merchandising Trade-ins Tech/product support Opening and closing Problem-solving without backup That is valuable on a resume. You also learn independence. If you can run a store alone, you can handle pressure, prioritize, and make decisions without someone holding your hand. It can also be good if you like games, collectibles, tech, consoles, and talking to customers who care about that world. And if the store has decent traffic, you can build strong customer relationships. Regulars matter.

Cons

Being “store manager” but also being the only person there is often exploitation dressed up as responsibility. You may be expected to do the work of: Manager Sales associate Inventory clerk Security Customer service desk Tech advisor Cleaner Cashier Loss prevention Complaint handler All at once. The biggest cons: You are accountable for problems you may not have enough staff, payroll, or authority to fix. Upper management may push metrics, warranties, memberships, preorders, and sales goals without giving enough labor or support. You may get blamed for shrink, low numbers, customer complaints, late tasks, missed calls, or messy inventory even when the real issue is understaffing. Breaks can become fake breaks. If you are alone, you may not actually be able to step away. Safety can be an issue, especially with cash, consoles, theft, angry customers, or closing alone. The title can sound stronger than the pay. GameStop management responsibility has historically outweighed compensation in many stores. Burnout risk is high. You are constantly “on,” and there may be no one to absorb pressure with you.
