Pros
-Awesome coworkers -Decent pay compared to other retail stores -It started out as a wonderful place to work, but there were a lot of changes made. I used to look forward to going to work.
Cons
-Hours: There are not enough payroll hours for store employees to complete all of the tasks we are expected to. The replenishment crew is expected to finish stocking and upstocking a truck in five hours. You are also expected to stay until the truck is done. The replenishment crew were often expected to work twelve hours or more in order to finish the truck. And although we were only scheduled a certain number of hours, leaving at the time you were scheduled to leave was out of the question. When they ask you to stay, they are not asking, they are telling you. I have worked at Michaels for a few years. The turnover is high, so I've seen a lot of employees come and go. Every time (and I do mean every time) they hire new people, the new employees get at least twice as many hours as those who've worked there for several months or years. On multiple occasions I have gotten less than eight hours to zero hours in a week. -Employee rights: You are not treated like a human being when you work in this store. If you enjoy being slave driven, it's the place for you. Many times I have been refused a lunch break when I've been working for about six hours already. It's all about finishing tasks in a certain time period, and the employees and their feelings and their comfort are not taken into account at all. A lot of times I will find myself hungry enough that I am dizzy, and yet my superiors are still expecting me to climb poorly maintained ladders to put overstock into boxes. I've come home on many truck days not being able to walk because I was so tired. -The rules only apply to you: Store management and other managers operate on sort of a "do as I say, not as I do" policy. You have to follow all of the store procedures, but they are somehow exempt. Everything is the part time employees' fault, and the buck is passed by management all the time. No one is held accountable for anything in this store. -If you do something they don't like, they will cut your hours. This is regardless of whether what you did was against company policy or not. Decisions in this store are made based on pure emotion, usually anger, and there is literally nothing you can do about it. -Points system: 6 points and you're fired. Being late is 1/2 point. Calling in sick is 1 point. Leaving early is 1 point. No call/no show is 4 1/2 points. If you call in sick two days in a row, it only counts as one point. But, if you call in sick one day and leave early the next because you still aren't feeling well, you receive an additional 1/2 point on top of the first one. So, employees who attempt to come to work rather than calling in again are penalized. Also, if you're feeling sick and need to go home, or you have some extenuating circumstance which makes you late, you are penalized. However, if something goes wrong and you are expected to stay late or come in early, you are expected to just deal with it. You are required to respect your employers' time, but they are under no obligation to respect yours, and they don't. -Bottom line: It doesn't matter how long you work there, or how hard you work, you will always be treated like you are disposable. The employees simply do not matter to management in this store.
