They "pay philosophy" is lazy, and leaves Canadians with significantly less money than Americans. A senior Canadian tutor still earns less than a new American one, no matter what region in either country the tutors are from. They justification for this seems to be more like backpeddling to cover an error. They say it is competitive for each country, but of course ALL Canadians earn the same wage and ALL Americans earn the same wage, which is inconsistent with competition. Ontarians, for instance, are earning minimum wage. For months, they were being paid BELOW minimum wage. Additionally, speaking up about these pay issues, or any issue that affects a tutor's ability to work, can get you fired without warning. They fired 25 people in a single day a few days ago. Some had had previous warnings but no final warning, and many had never had a warning at all and only positive reviews. When it came out that they had done this, once again the backpeddled. They said it was for performance. My boss outright lied and said all the people who had been terminated were told why and had previously gotten warnings. The COO and other execs are performing a balancing act. They want to appear to be equitable, fair and ethical employers to investers and the public. But they also want to hired tutors like Uber "hires" drivers, but pay them less. Needless to say, the only way to maintain this balancing act is to lie. And to lie often. And to silence anyone who notices.
