Pros

Equity Residential is committed to not only taking care of it's residents, but also the employees. I have been here 10 years and I still get blown away at the amount of time and attention the employees get. I truly feel valued and appreciated every day. Another bonus of working at Equity--my co-workers feel like family to me now after 10 years. I have made lifelong friends here. Also, Equity has really started recognizing successes more frequently and shares those successes in our weekly portfolio-wide meetings. I really feel like I live the "work hard, play hard" motto here at Equity.

Cons

Some communities, in my opinion, are staffed a little light. I understand the save in salary but some communities could use maybe 1 more person in the office or 1 more person on the maintenance team (even if it's part-time or seasonal). I have only seen this at a couple of communities though.

Pros

I love the atmosphere here at Equity. It's a company that really does (for the most part) care about their employees. They really do foster a bootstrap mentality that anyone can go from the bottom on up and I see that all the time. They love to promote from within! They also have fantastic online classes and great structure for anyone new to the industry and/or company.

Cons

Worst thing? The fact that Equity works with skeletal crews, operating properties super skinny on personal in comparison to other companies. This in turn creates tons of stress as really you could really really use that extra service or office person. The other big con is how they treat employee residents. I have repeatedly seen my rent increases over 10% as an employee and there is literally no way to negotiate without putting up the biggest fuss. It is SO incredibly demotivating to work for a company that you know is taking home millions every year and then the one big perk of property management they squeeze you.

First and foremost - thank you for your 10+ years of service! Your tenure speaks volumes to your level of dedication, and as we recognize the importance of continuing to engage and retain our team members, we sincerely appreciate your feedback. We are continually looking at our employee discounts to take into consideration market factors, which is why the apartment discount percentage for Northern California was increased to 40%. That being said, as you likely know from your experience here, the market demands the increase percentages for lease renewals, and employee residents are subject to fluctuations in rental increases, as are all residents. Please know that we are always open to hearing your feedback, which is why we conduct our annual engagement survey, hold Town Hall meetings, have rolled out a new brand promise, and have planned our Leader Summits for the fall. We sincerely hope to have the opportunity to listen to and address your concerns. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts, and please keep the dialogue going with your local leadership team.

Pros

Decent commissions if you coerce the new residents to move-in by the end of the month as the 1st two leases each month are free (since its your job) and then tiered after that... but only if they move in the same month. Company does good job at trying to get you to drink the kool-aid with Be Think Play Live and other nonsensical awards given at what can only be described as high school pep rallies. Vacation and sick time are pretty decent. You get a day off to do community work that they never let you take.

Cons

Managers and the higher ups in their Ivory Towers have their favorite employees. If you don't conform to their ideology then you are marked. Men don't get treated the same as women and are tasked with more... and they expect more from you. No promotion from within. New managers from outside the company. No assistant managers, only Sr. Leasing which isn't in the budget. Staffing used to be decent until they tried to get by cheap and require managers to be multistage which leaves on site leasing staff to do more than compensated for.

We appreciate you taking the time to share your constructive feedback. While we recognize that we will always have areas of opportunity as a company, we aim to deliver on the Be Think Play Live brand promise that you mentioned, and we regret that was not your experience. Regarding commissions, after reviewing feedback from many employees, we did make a change to the structure earlier this year and all new leases are eligible for commission (within the guidelines of our commission policy). We did also bring back the Assistant Community Manager position at select communities. We would welcome the chance to discuss your experience, feedback, and suggestions with you at your convenience. Please contact our Regional HR Director at 206-508-0460 if you have any other thoughts you would like to share.
