Steady employer

Pros

Decent salaries. Steady employer with no layoffs. Education opportunities exist. Current home grown CEO is a regular guy, easy to relate to. 401k and pension

Cons

Work to life balance is preached but words don’t match expectations from supervisors. Internal promotion/hiring practices can be shady. Jobs are posted for show only in many cases when a candidate is already chosen. Losing the family atmosphere as many corporate practices being implemented by outsiders. Performance assessment process has been changed repeatedly over the past several years and it has eroded supervisors’ ability to reward good work. Only have 3 narrow ratings on 3 different categories which results in Top performers getting raises in the same small range as low or mediocre performers as upper management dictates arbitrary distribution of a pre-set allotment of funds.

Pros

Nice perks you generally see at larger companies like a cafeteria, library, occasional free food, and quiet areas for break. If you get a good office spot, you can generally be left alone to work if your work is mentally intensive or requires focus.

Cons

To get hired to a position, you're best bet is to already work for them. They do mostly in house hiring and promotions. To get in the door, you likely need a relative or friend to alert you to an opening in time and get you the job. Some management seems more concerned with day to day break routines than productivity and results. You can be easily overlooked and under valued of the manager doesn't look at you as a pal. The overall hiring and promotion practices stifle talent and hurt the company. You get a lot of overly content and unmotivated employees and weed out the possibility for improving the talent.
