Pros

In my branch, everyone is allowed to get up from their desks and chitchat without being reprimanded, and most people spend the day listening to music or podcasts which allows you to at least dissociate from the menial data entry work.

Cons

This company is conservative to its core, politically and socially. If you’re not straight and white, you’re regarded with suspicion and left out of professional and social opportunities. They won’t fire you, but they’ll make your working life a living hell until you decide to pursue other opportunities. The hierarchical structure of the company is ludicrously backwards. Management walks around expecting others to smell their farts, and never have I seen a genuine smile or thank you from anyone above supervisor level. The denigration is most apparent when the managers decide to have an impromptu meeting in the middle of the floor to discuss which workers are performing more poorly than others. I never thought I would work in such a culture. I took the job for the excellent health insurance despite the low wage. I plan on learning what I can about the trade and switching companies as soon as I get my check ups!

Pros

They have a very thorough training program

Cons

The ocean export manager and supervisor are probably the worst bigots I have ever seen. They are both arrogant, ignorant and abuse their superiority. I was harassed by the supervisor the entire time I worked there, which was a little over a year and a half. He micro managed every single task I was given, if I was away from my desk for more than 5 minutes he would text my personal cellphone and ask where I was. They have an “open door policy” which basically means any coworker or manager has to listen and take action if there is any harassment or issues going on that you tell them about. I told 3 managers, a coworker, an account manager and absolutely nothing was done. The woman’s position that I filled had me overworked and underpaid. When they trained me they made it very clear what was deemed legal and illegal to do within the company. My supervisor instructed me many times to cut corners, overcharge customers and rip off carriers. When I approached my manager about this, I was met with sarcasm and demeaned. My manager told me to continue doing the “illegal” tasks my supervisor asked me to do. When I asked if he could put that in an email, he refused because again. It was against the rules. They cut corners and rip people off so their bonus is bigger and the coworkers underneath them take the brunt of the issues. They refused to give me a raise, I worked anywhere between 5 -15 hours of overtime. They then put what they called a “pay freeze” on everyone and no one was allowed to work overtime unless approved by a manger and no one was allowed to get a raise. There are many many people that work there that have not seen a raise in YEARS. They overwork their employees and then say they can’t give them a raise because of budget cuts, while all the supervisors and higher management get to be apart of the bonus pool. Not to mention every one in this company is related one way or another. So if there are any openings for other positions, if you don’t know anyone you have no chance at moving up. There is no room for opportunity here. Their rules, uniform, office and management is completely outdated. Leaving this office was one of the best decisions I have made, I wish I had done it sooner.

Pros

it's a job you are already all dressed up for after hours drinks

Cons

Talk to any of the managers and try to understand what makes Expeditors stand above its competitors - oh wait you can't. Revenues have been poor for years and the only thing propping up the company is the interest rate environment, share buybacks and incestuous culture. Management is paranoid every time an article comes out saying the same thing and affecting its stock price and actively asks people to respond to it - and it's easy to get people to do things because half the team is related or married to the other half. Read some of those comments on these articles online and you can really see how desperate the company is and how underachieving people are. This company has been circling the drain for ages and people with more than 10 years left in their careers and not related to one of the VPs are leaving. You can see in some of the other comments how the company impacts the little guy at the bottom - low pay, no increases, no OT, bad hours - all while having to pretend that you are richer than you really are at work.
