Pros

Downtown location, free bus pass, my coworkers (non-management), health benefits, stock plan

Cons

Let's see, where to start: 1. Micro-management. Not in all departments, but I've had my fair share of dealing with micro-managers. Some days I feel as if I am back in preschool where you are put on a very short leash - we are all adults here last time I checked 2. Culture. This isn't to say that the professional culture is bad, but I think that it's a little too harsh. Some people think better when they are not in such restrictive clothing - like ties and panty hose - this isn't the 1950s anymore. If EI is going to be so restrictive on types of clothing, maybe they should just buy everyone uniforms. As for the "Professionalism", some managers need a little bit of work. Don't take everything so seriously and when you have a bad day, don't take it out on your employees. 3. Lack of Appreciation - I swear the only time I hear a "good job" is in a review - which are normally not on time. Perhaps the company could actually get a HR department? Why are the 'worker bees' the only ones reviewed? Why can't employees review their own managers/supervisors? How about a an employee satisfaction survey? Just because you have the title "manager/supervisor" doesn't mean you're good at it. 4. Time off - come on, let's get with the current times now. Why do we have to wait 5 years to get 3 weeks?

Pros

Job security. Free bus pass. It pays the bills, as long as you don't have many of them.

Cons

Where do I start? Have dreams of promotions and climbing the corporate ladder? STAY AWAY! Only way to move up is to be a professional kiss ass. Very old school, slow moving and unexciting. Pay is just enough to keep a roof over your head, as long as that roof is 40 miles outside of the city where housing is cheaper. Management doesn't seem to have to follow the same rules as other employees in terms of coming and going as they please. Employees do all the work and management gets all the recognition. Very stiff environment. MICRO-MANAGEMENT!!!! Huge lack of respect from management towards employees. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.

Pros

Expeditors is secure, transparent and approachable as an organisation. We're also very women friendly..... the growth of women within this industry is growing year over year.... within Expeditors, women management has been part of us almost since day 1... there is no glass ceiling here! The compensation programme within Expeditors has had a lot of criticism from not only the field within Expeditors but also from the external (financial analysts, recruitment agencies, etc.). The fact is, Expeditors pays a lower monthly/base salary to EVERY employee than most competitors. HOWEVER, the bonus programme is the driver. Unfortunately, people assume that management (in various forms whether at branch level or corporate level) walked into these positions and high salaries and bonuses - this is how it works everywhere else - so its difficult to not be judgmental about it. This doesn't happen, the individuals walk into their jobs 9 out of 10 times at the grass roots level. I walked in as a desk level air export agent and now I hold, after 14 years, a reputable position, have worked in 4 countries and have a salary and bonus structure Im happy with and always striving to increase month over month. This happened over time and between promotions and movements, the money comes along but only if the ambition to make it happen is there.... ambition is one thing... execution and making it happen is what brings the cash! I would never work for anyone else.... this is MY company. I love it and although there are things here and there that make us crazy.... Expeditors has taken care of me as long as I took care of them.... it is NEVER a one-sided relationship. Employees at the desk level and even struggling managers need to step outside of their box and understand, it happens but only with work and when the opportunity arises, you sure as hell better be ready for it.

Cons

The work/life balance is a struggle. We get a lot of flack as an organization for not being so 'employee friendly' (i.e. telecommuting, daycare centres on-site, etc. etc.).... but honestly, we're in a business.... we work with our employees to make sure they are happy in various areas that WE can control as a company. We don't want to put up a jaded image of the company... its simple... we are here to take care of our customers between 8-5 (and oftentimes well into the night).. doing that brings home the bacon and affords us the ability to take care of our home life. At the end of the day, this is how it is with any business a person runs.... its simple... its not just Logistics...
