Former OC and LA EMT

Pros

Care is one of the biggest companies that offers 911 experience in the OC/LA area which is hard to come by. They are well organized compared to other companies out there, they have newer rigs and equipment and try to stay on top of the newest and greatest thing. They are one of the few companies that still offer 24 hr shifts which is a huge plus with a school schedule.

Cons

Where to begin....the LA stations are terrible. Bad locations in crappy neighborhoods and not kept up at all. Bugs, old beds, nasty recliners that are questionable to sit on let alone sleep on. Posting is a must at all hours of the night whenever you are not on a call which means no sleep and means cranky EMTs. Favoritism is at an all time high, if you are a cute girl Nd get a DUI you can get a pay raise and work in dispatch, but if you are a guy start sending in your applications because you will get fired. The driving policies are left up to the "discretion" of the driving manager. Don't come to a full and complete stop while running code expect to be off drivers status for 6 months, hit a car while driving when they are short drivers, 3 weeks without a drivers status is good enough. Morale among the old timers is non existent, the new guys still don't realize what really goes on once you strip off the glitz and glam of running 911. Management can be cool, but most of them are on such a power that they forget where they came from and what it's like to be an EMT. EMTs are constantly talked down to by management.

Pros

- Its one of the few companies that offer 911 experience In Los Angeles. This is *extremly* valuable for many who are entering the EMS field. - Growing and stable company. - Newer ambulance fleet. - Involved in many special events. - EMTs are some of the best in the industry.

Cons

- Los Angeles division stations are neglected. While OC stations get flat screen TVs and better beds. LA Stations have not seen any improvement in living conditions. Mold, insect infestation, old beds and dirty recliners. - Extremly low and unfair pay. Studys show EMT's in other cities and counties are paid much higher and worked much less. Care generates higher revenue but EMT's never get compensated. - Supervisors lack basic interpersonal skills. - Poor morale among veteran EMTs do to company practices. - Managment is known to play favoritism among EMTs. - HIGHLY discourages "union-talk". - EMT's are treated as if they are the "bottom rung" in the company. EMT's are often talk down to.
