It is not an easy job, but extremely rewarding
Pros
You connect with students. Work from home in pajamas. Flexible schedule. Job satisfaction for me is very high. I greatly enjoy the time spent with students teaching them in live lessons.
Cons
I have read several of the cons that other people have written on this site and to be honest, I think that many of them are just bitter because they have to actually "work" when they are an FLVS teacher. I know I work much harder now than I did when I taught in the brick and mortar school, but the payoff and support is much greater at FLVS. Having been at FLVS for 9 years, I have seen teachers come and go and have heard their "grumblings". The bottom line is that most people come to FLVS to work from home. Not because of the students, not because of they believe in online learning as a choice for students, but simply because they want to work from home. Then when they realize that they have to actually work, they are upset. There is a difference in thinking about working and actually working. Sure, I think about my work 16 hours a day, but that does not mean I am actually working a 16 hour day. Sure, the students can call me from 8am - 8pm (and many do call at other times), but that doesn't mean I can't step away from my desk and throw the baseball with my son in the backyard. Many people put pressures on themselves and view it as FLVS putting pressure on them and that simply is not the case. Yes, we have to perform at a high level because FLVS believes in hiring only the best of the best teachers. So if you can't cut it, don't blame FLVS, look within. I apologize for the rant, but when a teammate of mine pointed out this website, I could not keep my opinion to myself.
