Toxic environment

Pros

Nice office environment Pantry is always stocked with drinks and snacks Old Guards at Senior management believe in doing the right thing for the better of Singapore

Cons

Toxic culture instil by mid level managers to blame everyone else for their own lack of foresight. Lack of experience in both processes and controls, especially from the security and risk managers. There’s consistent bullying which always covered with reasons that does not make any sense. Public shaming is consistently demonstrated but labelled as a sharing session. Bias is a norm. Minor issues are frequently snowballed into mountains to score. The culture is to award highlighting such issues to senior management, even from the same manager’s team. Mid level Managers lack leadership skills and manage the team by rank. Trust is not there. No integrity within the team. Every man for his own.

Pros

- Incredible external network - we’ve had speakers like Ray Dalio, Jon Gray etc. - Generous investment in staff learning and development; Strong emphasis on staying professionally relevant - Strong focus on purposeful mission (Alpha! Alpha! Alpha! Must grow reserves for Singapore!”) - Much staff engagement during this transition period. Like other companies in this digital age, we have been undergoing much change - more automation, leveraging data and tech much more etc. Some staff haven’t dealt with the changes well, so there has been some turnover, but not a big deal. Newcomers bring much value too. - Senior management - CEO, COO, CPO - have been doing their best to bring everyone along on this very necessary and occasionally difficult journey. I see and appreciate their effort - am sure many others do too. - Ground feedback is actioned on. Takes time, but better late than never!

Cons

Effective leadership isn’t across the board, so one’s experience is largely dependent on his direct bosses. This isn’t unique to GIC though.
