Pros

-A great summer camp for kids -They encourage fun approaches to learning -I met a lot of intellegent college students from Berkeley and Davis, and thought they could have done a lot better than this job.

Cons

I agreed to this low paying job because i had felxibilty as a substitute. I got paid $13/hr which I thought was a starting wage because oaklands minimum wage is $12.25. After hearing that normal team leaders from other areas were being paid $10/hr I was appalled. Considering minimum wage in Oakland/SF is in the $12 range I felt that the company was truely ripping off poor unknowing high school and college students. The staff was a mixed bag, good and bad. Some college students acted like immature high schoolers who left out anyone who didn't "fit in". I felt that the high schoolers were more mature than a lot of the young college students. As a sub position I felt very unprepared most of the time. During training days i got very little instruction and was just left to move chairs and tables. I felt like i was just being trown into a overwhelming situation where they expext you to know what your doing even though I had no idea what was going on due to lack of prior instrucion.

Thanks for your review. We value your feedback, and are sad to hear you did not enjoy your experience. Our compensation is competitive with other summer camp roles, and is indeed at or above minimum wage in all cities our camps are located. Those that benefit most from a summer with Galileo are also excited to gain the professional development rewards that come with our program. Those who thrive at camp feel no task is too great or too small for anyone on our team—from directors to instructors to interns—to do in support of one another and of our campers. We also encourage our staff to share feedback directly with their managers during the camp season, so we all have an opportunity to work together to find solutions in constructive ways. Thanks again for your feedback, and if you have any other thoughts, feel free to email outreach@galileo-learning.com.

Pros

It was a job that always kept me on my toes and taught me how to work with all types of personalities, both in the kids in my group and the adults I worked with. The project the kids get to do was amazing and the experience of mentoring them. The impact I made on asbergers, spectrum, and delayed children was especially rewarding, and that this camp with a Berkeleyesque culture openly welcomed all children.

Cons

The pay was bad, considering I worked over 50 hours every week which is more than full time. II was only paid weekly not hourly so all overtime I incurred was ignored. t was also exhausting work. Middle management was hard to work with because your experience is entirely dependent on your camp director, mine made me cry several times. I was also pressured almost EVERY DAY to stay late past time without pay even though I was already working over 50 hours a week and had an hour long commute home. It was seen as shameful and selfish to leave to go home on time, like you are not a team player. I felt like it wasn't my fault that the camp was poorly organized to where the "teachers" had to stay until 6 PM cutting out little pieces of paper to have materials for the next day for projects, Galileo should be spending some money on pre-prepared supplies! The other thing is management changes ALL the time, so most camps are run by new directors which will mean your camp will be very disorganized in the beginning, then there will be this huge push from upper management halfway through to clean up everyone's act. This simply means strict new measures are implemented that measure stupid things that don't really relate to the quality of the child's experience.

Pros

There was nothing good about this job

Cons

My boss had no idea about the learning needs of 1st graders, and she was always looking over you shoulder for everything. For a company that promotes self-thinking and innovation, they don't allow for their employees.
