Pros

Culture is quite healthy, everyone goes home at 5 except for those on high-demanding programs (Few people on these) Friendly Co-Workers Stable with no worries of layoffs Lots of benefits for healthcare, great gym, cafeteria (bit expensive), social clubs. Get discounts almost everywhere in town for just working at Garmin. Great discounts on Garmin gear. Hybrid - 2 days work from home

Cons

Little to no promotions. If engineer 2, you have to work at Garmin 5-6 years before becoming senior. No middle levels at all between an engineer 2 and senior. Pay raises and salaries do not account for inflation. Pay raises are only 3 - 3.5% if you are lucky. No bonuses Definitely, a boys club with upper management, but that's every company. For the most part they are nice to everyone. PTO is poor and accrues only. You do not start with any PTO. Do not shut down for Christmas, but you do get Christmas day and eve off. You do not get New Year's Eve off. This forces you to use a lot of PTO.

Pros

* Most everyone is extremely friendly and acts in good faith * The job is very comfortable. You can easily make a whole career here and be content. * Resources on campus for staying healthy are good (Rec center, gym, walking path, various groups/activities) * The company offers easy internal transfers if you decide your current position isn't for you. --------------------------------------------------------------- In conclusion: If you are the kind of person who wants a simple career that pays the bills and are health focused, this might be a good fit.

Cons

* Pay is decent, but definitely not competitive compared to other options in the area. * PTO is sparse and is lumped in with sick days. It's easy to burn through it faster than you get it. * (In my experience) the company is very conservative with new technologies/ideas - Which leads to a feeling of complacency in a lot of ways. * Innovation tends to be slow. A lot of the work in all of the segments is simply making feature parity with competitors * The technology that Engineers have access to to develop is often 15 years behind industry standards. * Depending on department, Work/Life balance can be difficult when deadlines come up. No one will flat-out ask you to work late during those times but there's absolutely judgement if you don't. The aviation segment is particularly bad about this. * Have seen MANY instances of people being asked to do things above their current level of expertise (and more importantly, their level of pay) * Engineers are often divided into very focused niches and are often discouraged from helping out with "other people's" technology - even when they could be an asset. It makes collaboration difficult when you need to reach across teams to do simple things. * I have seen many instances of Engineers being shot down by management even for benign suggestions. This varies manager-by-manager, with some clearly seeing engineers as machines which take in requirements and produce code with no agency. --------------------------------------------------------------- All in all: If you're the type of person who values quick, meaningful product development; broadening your skills; engineer-focused processes and growing your career... This probably isn't the place for you. If you do end up here, I suggest considering it as a stepping stone.
