No pay for training. Becoming a writing consultant in the university writing center requires you take a semester long preparation course, part of which involves leading your own appointments--none of which you are paid for. I can't think of another job where you don't get paid for training like this.

Pay is low, especially if you are not in one of the highest privately funded areas (e.g., Business, International Affairs) or have multi-million dollar grants to pay you more. Very little to no "extra" benefits. Although somewhat typical of Universities, you would be lucky to even get a meal paid for twice a year. They don't reward good teaching and mentoring for the most part. Unless you have the time to apply for very high paying grants every year and are fortunate enough to get one, good luck on anything more than a 1% pay raise. Health care is costly and many medications no longer covered, they are too political in the administration (not in a positive way most of the time). It's an urban campus with limited safety measures in place. I know several faculty who have an "extra" job on the side just to afford having kids while working at GW in the DC area.
