Pros

-They have unlimited PTO which is seamlessly integrated with the company's messenger and requires no approval if less than 2 weeks for each submission. - While not quite as transparent as the pre-IPO days, the level of transparency in the public facing handbook still beats every other company and rivals some academic institutions in terms of quantity of valuable information. (such the the entire UX dept handbook, which can be viewed by anyone and helpful for any UX dept in the software space). - The real commitment to Diversity, Inclusion & Belongingness both in terms of leadership action and fiscal backing is pretty nice. There can always be more done, but the company does take their values very seriously. - Every person operates independently by working from home (even the CEO), and the large majority of meetings can be either rescheduled or missed and reviewed later a-sync. The entire company is built on a-sync, WFH workflows so I flexibility is unparalleled and very suited for the post-pandemic world.

Cons

-Because each person handles their own schedule, some people can either become a little lazy at times, or extremely tired and overworked at other times. But there are mental health resources to help prevent burnout.

Pros

I love how clear the vision of GitLab is to be a best-in-breed Open Source player in the market. GitLab continuously makes it clear that the community is able to co-create GitLab and that we should, not only care, but treasure those that want to contribute. I've worked in many open source companies before, but this is the first where I see the open source ethos values being carried out in all departments. I also love that there are so many good-hearted people, including management, that genuinely want to do the right thing.

Cons

In the first couple months it felt a bit like chaos theory. There is just so much that it is overwhelming and even feels unmanageable. Given that it is remote, doesn't make this much easier, but this is only a very minimal con - and not much that I see that can be done about that. This is the cost of being extremely transparent, but I would never advice to be less transparent - so keep it up

Pros

Collaborative environment with a genuine culture of transparency. Very strong management with clarity on vision.

Cons

I have not detected any cons so far outside of normal growing pains for a company growing so fast
