Pros

Completely depends on who your PI was. Some labs had a family feel and would support you when your work needed help.

Cons

Completely depends on who your PI was. A poor data presentation could draw enough stinging criticism that I saw some graduate students reduces to tears.

Pros

Flexible schedule, freedom to pursue own scientific interests and questions, access to UCSF resources and contacts, nice facilities, good vacation and benefits

Cons

Relatively low pay, not much room for growth or changing roles, each lab varies a lot, awkward culture, lots of focus on the post docs and graduate students, without as much attention paid to research associates who are also in the midst of developing their careers.
