A Disappointment.

Pros

- Amazing benefits. Some of the best I have ever seen: exceptional insurance coverage (medical/dental/vision), catered lunches daily, weekly massages, a wellness stipend, flexible WFH policy, dogs in the office, and more. - Cool programs like GFM Givesback, where employees can nominate meaningful campaigns to receive donations from the company. You feel like you really make a difference. My coworkers/peers were the most talented I've ever worked with. They are so passionate about their job because they truly want to make the world a better place. Feels like family. - Great name recognition in the industry, great stepping stone to other tech jobs, if that's your path.

Cons

- You'll be overworked and underpaid. You'll also stay in whatever role you first land in, no matter how you try advancing your career. If you're looking to grow, don't bother. - Upper management isn't effective and they have a really tough time admitting failures to grow from. Lots of lip service/cute buzzwords in company communications, no real change. - Feedback from all sources (employees/customers) is not taken seriously. There are (mandatory) processes in place to share, but nothing results. Waste of time and energy. - Company does have a set values that sound good, but to them, they are for the employees to extend to the customers, NOT the company to extend to their employees. This is a major red flag.

Pros

Before VC stranglehold, GFM was a place where values internally matched the company mission to help people. Employees flourished, were treated with directness, and opportunity abounded. It was truly brilliant.

Cons

Something so beautiful and purpose-driven descended into an ugly, tarnished shell of itself through corporate greed and VC pressure. Relentlessly parading the strong values it once truly lived, it preys on employees who live those values authentically. People who are attracted to the do good mission are motivated to “change the world”. You do get to do this to a degree, and that keeps you going. GFM puts on a great show of caring about you, about diversity, etc., but in the end, tenured, previously successful employees who gave their all for 5-10 years are mercilessly broken down by new managers trying to get to the top and fired or laid off. No dignity or consideration for your well being after all you’ve given. Disgraceful, fake, soulless, conniving, toxic business. A truly sad trajectory. Now I donate to causes through Venmo or other means.

Pros

GoFundMe has great pay and excellent benefits. As an employee you enjoy lots of bonuses, funding for meals, fun outings (when possible), stock options, full health benefits, access to mental health support, and many other perks. The people they hire are genuinely kind, good, and talented people. The work you do is fulfilling. GoFundMe has become a household name and is an avenue of support for a lot of folks who wouldn't find financial support elsewhere. GoFundMe is doing great as a company and is growing quickly.

Cons

GoFundMe "Runs Lean" which basically means they are perpetually short staffed and a large workload falls on a smaller number of employees rather than hiring to keep up with their rapid growth. There are less opportunities for upward mobility and to be 'promoted from within'. In Customer Support, management is young and inexperienced. They do not know how to treat people's time as a limited resource and manage accordingly. There is blatant favoritism and a culture of toxic positivity. There are metric expectations which are very high and there is a problem with team members inflating metrics in an effort to keep their jobs. Rather than fix the problem at the root they fire anyone they catch inflating metrics although it's a widespread problem. If you don't inflate metrics you often struggle to keep up and are treated poorly. I was trained by three different agents at three different times on how to inflate metrics. They always acknowledged it was wrong and always said something like: 'you do what you have to'. Other agents also shared similar experiences and yet management wouldn't change the expectations. Instead, they create a culture of instability and fear. It's a huge problem that leads to burn out. While they talk a lot about empathy, that is rarely extended to employees in customer support. I witnessed team members get fired when difficult life circumstances interfered with their ability to meet high metric standards. It was hard to witness and was demoralizing.
