All about the numbers

Pros

You get paid for working. Other than that there is no reason to get a job here.

Cons

Five years ago we all loved our jobs. We felt we made contributions to the company and our success. Tenure means nothing. Since the company started 'working the numbers', it's all about making it and the people are just a number. It's very sad. We used to laugh at work and enjoy it. Not anymore. Management has NO IDEA how many people are looking for jobs. They try to use some fancy hiring and screening program and people won't stay anyway.

Pros

Average base salary, profit sharing, uncapped commissions. Good overall benefits package. Fair fuel allowance, but not overwhelming. Deep product offering and wide spread vendor support

Cons

Commission structure not consistent with size of territory, number of accounts and value of those accounts! Goals double digit year over year! More obsessed with calendar appointments and checking the task boxes than actual customer service and sales. Branches being closed and customer service employees being reduced in record numbers to cut costs, but yet Grainger continues to price gouge customers based on "value" they can't deliver on. Grainger owns a subsidiary called Zoro Tools that offers many of the same exact products at a fraction of the price and they are shipped from Grainger's own inventory! Too many corporate levels. Customer service, sales, distribution, and the other various departments seem to operate as individual companies rather that fluidly going together. Too many directors, vp's, and various managers who take up space, hold up progress and who are more about "look at me and what I do"

Can we survive the changes?

Pros

Great company with a ton of resources and opportunities. Still has great benefits. Great training for sales. Great brand. Lots of opportunities for development.

Cons

Lots of changes happening very quickly without total understanding of strategic vision. Brand of being a high-priced provider makes it difficult to sell in a price-transparent environment. Leadership changes feel very inconsistent. Too much politics.
