Pros

Benefits are outstanding. Some departments do a great job of developing their people, evaluating talent, and promoting accordingly. The trick is to be in one of those departments.

Cons

One's experience at Grainger is completely dependant on 2 things: what department one happens to be in; and how connected one is to management. There are pools of people that all came from several other companies and they tend to isolate positive opportunities amongst themselves. There is a hypocrisy when management preaches continuous improvement but rejects suggested changes for the better in favor of status quo.

Pros

Using advanced ERP software (CRM, SAP, BW, etc..) to handle complex business transactions. Company has numerous resources to assist sellers (technical support, quotes dept, 1200+ suppliers, sourcing, extensive branch network, etc..). Represent thousands of suppliers and hundreds of thousands of products to a variety of customers. Interaction with (but not limited to) engineers, maintenance professionals, owners, and purchasing agents related to high dollar facilities management projects.

Cons

There are too many yes-men, robotic thinkers, and cubicle mentality managers which leads to high turnover of good employees. Lack of career development and recognition of hard work. Company is over-departmentalized and operate on their own agenda. Internal politics are dangerous and ruin company's reputation. Majority of tenured employees lack enthusiasm. Flavor of the month selling promotions. Upper management focuses on the wrong things, force change, give up on initiatives too quickly, and short-circuit many processes.

Pros

Large corporation benefits, stability. They have a gorgeous corporate headquarters with a stream and waterfall in it. Nice cafeteria. Cubicle country though, only officers of the company have offices.

Cons

HIGHLY POLITICAL. Watch your backside there, trust few people, be prepared to be a brown noser to get to the top. Things are shaken up there so frequently that people have a tendency to stay scared in their positions.
