      New College Graduates - Stay Away

      Some of the coworkers are very dedicated and a pleasure to work with.

      Cons

      A general lack of communication, and, at least in my case, lying. Like some other reviewers have said, this company says that it will let you know if it has any problems with you and will work with you if there are any issues. This was most certainly not true for me. I was terminated quickly and with no warning. The quality of my work was complemented, but someone must not have liked me because I was fired due to "an inherent flaw in my personality." What?! Talk about getting kicked while being down. If you're a new college grad: stay away. This company seems to prey on the young and inexperienced. And let me tell you: you can find better compensation. I did, and I had to be fired to know I could.

      It’s true, we have high expectations of all our professionals, including recent college graduates. Although we try to adhere consistently to our practice of giving everyone ample opportunity to succeed, there are circumstances when it is necessary to separate more promptly for the sake of co-workers, particularly if they find one’s conduct unprofessional. In all cases, without exception, we attempt to coach those in need of professional guidance. When there is disagreement about the need for it, both parties are best served by simply parting ways. This, we believe, is fully consistent with respect for the personal dignity of everyone concerned. And, of course, we never fail to pay severance due. We are pleased to learn you have found another position that suits you. With regard to your remark about compensation, it may be helpful to clarify our compensation structure. Compensation at Grant Street consists of base salary and a discretionary, performance-based bonus. Base salaries typically match or exceed market averages, but our bonuses are often well above market. So, while other employers may pay higher salaries, we often pay materially more in total compensation.

      Pros

      I feel like GSG has provided me with a fantastic community of thinkers. My coworkers are generous, intelligent, and kind, pretty much without exception. These qualities are things that the company actively works to cultivate within its teams, and which perpetuate an incredible corporate culture. I don't have a background in technology, and never saw myself working for a tech company--if you had asked me what I thought of a tech job a few years ago, I probably would have said something about it being boring or soul-crushing. My experience at GSG has been the opposite. I firmly believe that my work is making me a smarter, better individual with more tools at my disposal to make a positive impact in the world. The work is not 'sexy'--we make tax software, not video games. However, it would be hard for me to remember a time in my (albeit short) professional life in which I've felt as fulfilled, or as supported by my team. I think this corporate culture largely stems from the work philosophies of the CEOs, Myles and Dan. Their approach to management is one of radical transparency and mutual respect. I feel that they genuinely care about the well-being of their people, and understand that the company's success is in great part the result of attracting employees who are as kind as they are talented. In short, it's a wonderful place to work. The other benefits (working from home, generous leave, competitive salary, excellent health benefits) are wonderful, but not more important than the community they serve.

      Cons

      GSG has struggled to build ethnic diversity within its ranks, which is something that management has openly discussed with employees and which the company is doing its best to address. Since I was hired (around a year ago) I've seen lots of improvement in this area, but we have a long way to go.

      Not a great place to be - don’t waste your time

      Small company - can learn the ins and outs of how a business works Compensation - generous pay for folks Great product

      Cons

      Unprofessional - bosses do not promote or evaluate employees based on talent or performance. Certain bosses spend significant amount of time with employees outside of work = extremely unprofessional Lack of structure - certain groups get to work from home while others do not, some are expected to put in long hours, etc

      Thank you for your review. Our CEO, Myles, asked me to pass along this note: Thank you for your "Pros" section compliments. With respect to your "Cons", as a relatively small company with 200 employees and an aversion to hierarchy, we reward performance with "generous pay", as you have acknowledged, including generous year-end performance bonuses. With respect to the time our employees choose to spend together outside of work, that's none of my business. Presumably they simply enjoy each others' company enough to want to socialize a bit. You are correct, there is a lack of top-down decisions about structure at GSG -- because we believe firmly in the principle of subsidiarity; that the best management decisions, whether related to strategy, operations, product or customer service, will be made by our small teams of mature professionals. This structure has served us well for the past 20 years. So as President, I am inclined to stay out of the way.
