Chaotic and Demanding

Pros

There are fantastic people at GSG who work hard every day. As a BA, you're exposed to a lot of different parts of software development, which is great experience. Onboarding is thorough and good. CEOs are well-meaning and generous.

Cons

Day-to-day work was chaotic and unpredictable. BAs are asked to take on too many roles, and not compensated appropriately when factoring in what they actually do (and not just what their title is). Since Business Analyst is not a well-defined role across many industries, they have lumped multiple roles into a single job title and called it a day. Operations are inexperienced at guiding a growing software company and it shows. Team switching is constant. Meaningful promotions are practically non-existent. Firings became increasingly common, and were done without clear explanations ("they weren't a good cultural fit" is weak). Decisions about team structure or movement are made unilaterally, without input from regular BAs or explanation to teams about rationale. Team movement decisions have no recognizable guiding principle behind them. Context switching is basically the norm. While ideas for improvements will get tossed around, I saw few if any actually get implemented (e.g., BAs were expected to be on-call after hours on a rotating basis, and that was supposed to be a offloaded to some kind of support team, but nothing ever came of it). Incidents are increasingly common and require taking on additional work on top of existing projects, adding to the extreme workload. There is a lot of talk but not a lot of action on any of these fronts. Operations management is either unwilling or unable to do anything but nod approvingly at concerns. There's a lot of potential here and the product is good. But few in management seem to want to take responsibility for how chaotic day-to-day work has gotten for BAs over the last year.

Our Operations Director, Christen Long, asked me to pass on the following response to your review: Thank you for your complimentary remarks about your former colleagues and some aspects of your experience at Grant Street. It’s certainly true that our rapid growth has presented challenges. We have overcome them in the past and we will overcome them in the future by sticking to a principle that has led to our success to this point - a deep commitment to our people and our products. We demonstrate this commitment by encouraging our teams to participate in a collegial approach to problem solving and strategic decision-making, and we expect that we will not get everything right on the first try. We believe this openness to allowing our people (including management) to try things, make mistakes, and then learn and improve is not a failure but a strength. We believe in our people, and know that they will find the right way to address all of our natural growth challenges. How can we be so confident? Our history shows that our approach works. And it explains how we have achieved a 35% compound annual growth rate over the past 25 years with a rate of attrition that is about half that of our industry peer group.

Pros

Smart people - they even have weekly tech team meetings where people give presentations of their technical work, and teams will share with each other little things that they learned during the last week. Strong codebase - they do care about the quality of their code. Ability to work remotely - always a plus. People seem to be very "people-perceptive" - they will share notes about their relationship status with their clients with the whole company. This is a double-edged sword though - see below.

Cons

Do not communicate expectations clearly - as even they say, they "don't do a lot of management". You are however responsible for those expectiations. Onboarding is "drinking through a fire hose". Want to know deeply about employees (the interview process was probably more personal than most other companies' interview processes), but don't be fooled into thinking this disclosure may not cost you - it did cost me. Be careful about what you share with them. I was particularly hurt by the fact that the CEO said they'd work with employees in a rough stretch, even giving them a sabbatical if need be, and yet when I went through a hard time I was terminated suddenly - by the time I was told I was in danger of being let go, I think the decision was already made. Pay is rather low relative to expectations (in full disclosure, I didn't get a year-end bonus payment, so I don't know what that is typically) Overall, this is not a good first (or second) job. Only recommended for those who have mature development careers, aren't optimizing pay, and/or looking for a remote position - and most people who succeed at GSG fit that profile.

Our CEO, Myles Harrington, asked me to pass along the following note: As the CEO I stand by my commitment to "work with employees in a rough stretch". We have done so in the past and we will continue doing so in the future. Without going into your personal circumstances, I think there may be one essential point of disagreement: whether you were alerted to the "danger of being let go" well in advance of being "terminated suddenly". Regardless, the simple fact that you feel hurt, that you feel you suffered an injustice, is sufficient to convince me we failed to act fully in accord with our personalist philosophy. I apologize.
