Pros

Nothing really. The product does not achieve as much as it thinks it does. The only thing it has going for it is that the bigger companies see the cost-benefit of competing to be not worth it. So it's only real competition is any upstart and looks like one is coming for its throat.

Cons

Leadership has performed 3 layoffs in 4 years. Their inability to build a true product suite makes it susceptible to losing in the long run. Sourcing Automation is not valuable and that's why they laid off the entire team they acquired in the M&A. To give everyone a bonus after laying off people is a slap in the face to everyone. In all honesty, the severance you paid them was really just the bonus you owed them. The fact that not a single leader has been laid off shows that there is no accountability. The fact that your leadership has allowed two layoffs in 8 months from each other shows inability to evolve or lead. DEI product features are a joke. The DEI features we are touting is the equivalent to saying "I don't see color". Your customers don't use structured hiring. They use you for the job application experience. So the name pronunciation, pronouns, and structured hiring does little to actually impact DEI and every TA professional can see right through it. A DEI statement is just a statement. We have done very little to operationalize DEI through our product. Customers don't care about the interview plan, They don't care about the scorecard. They care about approvals, reporting, and candidate review. Most ATS can do that. There is nothing compelling about using structured hiring because the customer can't even use any kind of reporting that actually validates it more than just a hypothesis. The scheduler is probably the worst in the business from a candidate and TA perspective. Even before working here, I dreaded having to give my availability using Greenhouse. Takes forever to say I am available Monday through Thursday except between 1-2pm, See how quickly I can type that. To tell the software that takes 5 minutes. If Workday actually wanted to compete, we would be crushed in a matter of months. But ATS is nothing but a value feature for them. Never the core. Our SMB and Midmarket segments have been bleeding and no support has been given to them. As a result I haven't seen a single quarterly bonus in 2023 and my numbers were all worthy of a bonus. It's like taking a paycut. Your leadership is very inconsistent. They will say they prioritize one thing and will tell you they don't value another area. Then, will ask why you aren't showing great numbers in that area. Because you told me it didn't matter. Leadership does not know what it is doing. As aggressive as the feature roadmap seems to you, the customers only care about three features you are releasing. Even those features they care about is still too early in its development for them to actually care about it. Not when they already have a robust product they are paying for that can do more than the basics we are offering.

Hello and thanks for making the effort to share your viewpoint so comprehensively. You've obviously got frustrations with many/most aspects of work here. I think our products speak for themselves and people can read lots of customer feedback on G2 etc. However, one thing I wanted to address specifically, the idea that layoffs are meant to punish or blame certain people. The idea that because someone's job was affected by a layoff, and therefore that person is to blame is a drastic mis-reading of the situation. Please avoid implying that anyone is "blaming" those let go (and by extension, absolving those not let go). Layoffs are painful, and while that pain is borne primarily by those impacted by them, no leader wants to do one. When they are done, it's not about who to blame - it's about fixing the problem by focusing on what roles and people that the company can afford going forward. Finally, I hope that you are able to either work out how to have a satisfying career here or if not, that you can find another workplace that better suits your needs. No one deserves to be as frustrated at their job as you appear to be.

Saying You're People-First Doesn't Make You People-First

Pros

I strongly believe in the mission and the product itself is terrific.

Cons

Where to even start? The last few exec level hires have been disasters. For example, the CPO is more interested in being an HR & LinkedIn influencer than doing his actual job. After seeing so many companies botch layoffs, it's incredible that Greenhouse didn't learn any lessons. From the laughable severance (8 weeks even for employees with several years of service) to the tone deaf public posts from senior leadership, the execution was a complete embarrassment. Benefits like unlimited PTO are meaningless. Even if you're actually able to take PTO, you won't actually be able to unplug and recharge.

Hello and thank you for making the effort to provide your thoughts and perspective. Even though it's clear you did not leave Greenhouse with a positive impression it's still valuable for us and others to hear your thoughts. I'm disappointed that despite your belief in our mission and product, you did not see the same positive attributes reflected in the culture and people around you. I agree 100% that just saying "people-first" does not make it so; yet, I am strongly committed to the vision of a company where our values are held strong and where people can show up and do their best work. Clearly we did not live up to that vision from your perspective, and we'll do what we can to learn from your feedback and improve. I do hope in your next role you are able to find a place that better matches your needs and expectations, and thanks for your contributions and feedback.

Pros

if you possess greenhouse's desired immutable traits, then you will have a better chance of getting an offer than the average applicant, irrespective of your experience or qualifications. use it to your advantage while you can.

Cons

the work culture here is highly liberal (leftist) and not friendly towards conservatives. they talk about embracing diversity but not diversity of thought. they talk about inclusion and tolerance but only if you think, walk, and act a certain way. they cherry pick d&i - keeping the aspects that appeal to their social justice aesthetics and discarding the rest with cold contempt. if you are a white, straight, male - you will always be reminded of that. people here are defined and categorized by their immutable traits. character is secondary. if you enjoy working in a highly politicized environment, then this is the place for you.

Hi, I appreciate this post as it shines a light on something I feel very strongly about - that hiring needs to be rooted in fair and objective criteria. Both because this provides the hiring team with the best chance to compete for top talent (no matter who they are or what they look like!) and also as a result, it helps unlock people's potential in the workplace. Some folks see that as a political stance but ,to me, looking beyond basic assumptions and taking the time to seek out and to assess talent fairly and objectively is smart business! We employ hundreds of people globally here at Greenhouse and I have no doubt we have employees who have voted differently than me; who believe different things than I do about social and political topics; who identify differently than me. That diversity is a strength, not a weakness; a feature, not a bug. One thing we all have in common at Greenhouse is our values. Belonging, Entrepreneurship and Purpose guide our actions and define our culture. I think most people can agree that a world in which access to economic opportunity is driven by fair, relevant and objective criteria is a superior one to where bias (implicit or otherwise) serves to limit and undermine potential.
