Pros

When things were good a few years ago, they were good. The true colors came out when the economy shifted.

Cons

When things were going well at Greenhouse during the post-covid growth period, everything was great. However, if I've learned anything about life is that what matters most in people is how they respond when things are not going well. Leadership (speaking about the sales organization) grew toxic, overbearing; you had to watch your back. Accounts shuffled around too many times, many colleagues burnt out and quitting. While some of this has to do with the economy, a large portion of it can be attributed to leadership practices and poor processes in place to support employees. The organization says they're "people-first," but that's FAR from what I saw in the last year of working at Greenhouse. It seems more like a marketing strategy, unfortunately. Toxic environment and leadership, internal 'office' politics, and poor process with growing pains of a scale-up. I enjoyed my earlier years at Greenhouse when things were going well, but I would not recommend this company to anyone I know.

I can quibble with some of the details you mentioned, but I 100% absolutely agree with your headline, "Saying you're people-first doesn't mean you're people-first" -and for sure, there are times when we haven't lived up to that billing. Specifically, I know that during the most stressful parts of this current downturn, is when many of us leaders (myself included) were at a low. The stress of the downturn and its effects on the business led many of us to not show up as our best selves and I am very aware of the distress this caused. Seeing it written out only confirms this. I apologize for how this has impacted you and others, and I know our other leaders feel the same. What I can say without a doubt is, the leadership team and I have acted decisively to counteract this and restore the healthy leadership culture we've enjoyed for 10+ years. We've focused on this for months (including many of the steps you have suggested in your advice) and I know that many in the company have seen a huge improvement in this way. I do hope you have as well.

Stay far away. TERRIBLE leadership

Pros

ZERO. None. Negative stars. Terrible.

Cons

Leadership ONLY cares about themselves and how much THEY earn. They don’t promote the people who deserve it, yet promote friends on the managers. They have a manager who has ZERO experience of managing a team. A team that goes from over 10 to less than 4 in the matter of a month, that’s the managers problem. They have zero understanding of the market and how hard it is. “Just do more work” is the answer. Not quality work. They never changed quota since the market shot down. Said they were never going to do layoffs, yet they did. They let favorites sandbag opportunities for the next month, but shame others who do it who aren’t tight with the manager. Managers will sabotage you even after you leave the organization. Don’t ever ask for a good word to be put in, because they will lie about you & your experience. Zero training. You’re expected to learn the software and industry on your own. Expected to overcome every objection instead of build relationships with the prospect. They literally have no clue what’s going on in the sales, marketing, and business departments. The only thing carrying the company is the software engineers who made the actual ATS. This is literally career suicide if you choose Greenhouse. They aren’t “people first”. STAY AWAY

Oy, it sounds like you had a truly poor experience over your 3-4 years here. So sorry to hear it. We strive for excellence in how we run this company but obviously we failed to meet that high standard in your case. The team and I will look for ways to use this feedback to improve. My goal is for future employees to have a more consistently positive experience here. Meanwhile thank you for taking the time to make your perspective known, and I hope that you've found a workplace that better suits you. I truly believe everyone deserves a job and a culture that is best for themselves.

Missing the mark

Pros

Greenhouse has great talent working on the front lines. The company invests in employee resource groups and DE&I year after year, which is appreciated. Culture at lower levels is wonderful and the benefits are strong (ClassPass, 401K Match, etc).

Cons

Greenhouse leadership, with the exception of Dan and Jon, are generally invisible and therefore useless. Directors+ are constantly turf-guarding. Above all else, trust in the organization has gone out of the door because of rolling layoffs and constant budget cuts. Allowing private equity (TPG) to control the company was likely the worst mistake the Executive Leadership team ever made. When I first got here, Greenhouse’s investment in the growth & motivation of its people was felt at every corner. As conditions have worsened, great talent has left the company, layoffs have left many teams deeply understaffed (particularly CS, AM, and Support), and growth opportunities are non-existent.

Hello and thanks for taking the time to share your feedback, I know people value hearing from folks inside the org. I appreciate your perspectives here but respectfully I would disagree with some of your conclusions: - Far from being either invisible or useless, the leaders across Greenhouse are the heart of the company. While I appreciate the personal compliment, remember that I do not write a single line of code, handle a single support ticket, close a single sale, or do any of the myriad things it takes to make this company tick. I'm sorry your experience felt otherwise but I am proud to work with this team. - Yes, like nearly every tech company, as conditions have changed, we have had to adjust (sometimes painfully) but if you are under the impression that TPG has been either the cause of these problems, or the reason we have acted to reduce cost and inefficiency, you are mistaken. As the CEO the buck stops here and while I greatly value the advice and resources of TPG, the decisions are our own. I have been and remain extremely impressed with the response of our teams to the challenges presented by the market. We have a track record of growing revenue every year, with increasing profitability, while also investing in R&D and services to support our customers today and for a long time to come. In some superficial ways it may not feel like the Greenhouse of old, but in those fundamental ways - commitment to the mission, focus on what matters most, and delivering for our customers - we are stronger than ever. Thanks for your feedback and I hope you are able to connect with a workplace that better matches your desires.
