Great product, but poorly run company

Pros

Great product, and there is no shortage of intelligent and hard working people.

Cons

Management is inexperienced, and the culture is very fratty and catty. It's not uncommon for someone to get a negative attitude from higher ups including the CEO. There is no growth, and the message that they "invest in their people" felt false more times than naught. Recognition no matter how hard you work, or what good work you produce, will be over looked because of the value on popularity and being a part of management's fan club.

Thanks for taking the time to share your point of view. It really sounds like you had quite a negative experience working here. As you can imagine, I’m disappointed that we didn’t do a better job for you. I care deeply about people and have dedicated my career to building a successful company by starting with great people and culture. Now, it’s hard for me to know exactly what your comments mean because of the anonymous nature of Glassdoor. But I will say this - like everyone, I definitely am subject to my share of emotions. Sometimes I get frustrated, lose some perspective, have a bad day (or week), etc. I have my biases and personality preferences that I work to increase my awareness of and to overcome, not always successfully. Even though it’s painful and embarrassing to see it called out (moreso publicly), it helps. So I’ll choose to take this feedback constructively and use it as a learning experience. I’m truly sorry for any times when you didn’t feel positivity from me. All startups are works-in-progress. As an entrepreneur for the past 20+ years, I am acutely aware of the need for continual improvement and hearing critical feedback is vital to that process. Thank you for taking the time to provide your perspective.

Pros

Pros: The team itself was friendly and supportive. Good branding.

Cons

Cons: The company culture felt cultish at times. While the focus on Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) was positive in theory, it sometimes overshadowed the actual work and became the main focus. The company environment felt very political. It seemed like having the "right connections" was more important than strong performance. There were two layoffs in less than a year, which felt inconsistent with the company's outward image. They continued to post about hiring sprees and luxurious events like trips to Cannes or President's Club retreats. The acquisition of the Interseller team was poorly handled. Despite being a thriving company, the entire team was let go and the product was abandoned. The team was also never fully integrated, and they seemed excluded from important meetings and company-wide events.

Thank you for sharing your candid feedback and reflecting on your time at Greenhouse. First let me say that I’m sorry to hear that your experience didn’t live up to our high expectations. It’s good to know that you found the team to be friendly and supportive, and that you appreciated the branding. However, I can see as well that there were aspects of the culture and company environment that didn’t resonate with you. One thing in particular that you mentioned (the balance between the 'actual work' vs broader cultural programming), echoes themes from inside the company. You may be interested to know that we have actually put some clearer guidelines around ERG activities to help employees better manage the focus on the business with our commitment to ERG's. Those changes seem to be having a very positive effect within the org. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts. I hope you find a place where the culture and environment better align with your expectations and needs.

Pros

Great reputation, striving towards good values, great product

Cons

Where to begin. Stressed out management. Limited mobility despite reputation to the contrary. Recruiting department is in the spotlight and particularly unpleasant to work in. Clique-ey. Political. Inexperienced managers.

Thanks for taking the time to share your perspective and your experiences. While we work hard to be a great place of work it's inevitable that we'll get things wrong from time to time. Sounds like in your case you had a rough experience with a number of areas including team, culture and career path. So sorry to hear that. I'm always looking to fix problems; it would greatly help me to learn more about the specific situation so that we can take targeted steps to address any issues. If you're open to it, please reach out to me personally and I'd love to have a confidential conversation to hear more details from you. In any event I absolutely agree with your advice to candidates - when interviewing here (or anywhere else). The interviews are by definition only a slice of the full picture. Anything a candidate can do to learn more and educate yourself about the job, team, role, company, etc. will only empower them to make better choices for themselves. Thanks!
