Pros

If you want to (mostly) stay out of office politics and work autonomously, it's fine.

Cons

Poor salary, physically demanding, Expectations are that you will do eight hours of work in three hours. I had a supervisor with very poor communication skills who came from a 40+ year career in auto sales. He would threaten loss of employment, pit merchandisers from other stores against each other to try to motivate us, much the way they do car salesmen who make thousands upon thousands of dollars more than a card merchandiser ever would. No upward mobility in this position whatsoever. I worked in a large box store where most of the warehouse personnel gave the merchandisers grief. My co-RM and I were never given any appreciation.

Pros

Great benefits and awesome cafeteria known as the Crown Room. Many great people have worked there for years during the early days when they truly cared for their employees. I heard stories that Joyce Hall used to go around and visit with employees regularly. That type of personal interface would never happen in the current climate.

Cons

Once you get your foot in the door, if you don’t negotiate your true value up front, you can never get to a fair salary no matter how hard you work or how many hours you spend over 40 per week. Fact is, you can be doing the same job beside another person making double your salary. The HR Dept. will not negotiate with you if you are seeking a promotion with increasing responsibility but will quickly let you know there are multiple other candidates out there ready to kick down the door for the job if you don’t take it. They set the pay and are not influenced by any competing employer’s salary scales. There is a complex grade system but it is impossible to learn what those scales actually represent as far as real numbers. Much speculation exists but I can say from experience that no one truly understands these scales except for those with the lock and key to HR.
