Corruption in the Board Room

Pros

Quality products. Hard-working associates. Gives back to the community.

Cons

Harmons built three stores within a year. After the third store opened they called an all-employee meeting and cut the pay of hard-working associates (some with over 30 years + invested). They also eliminated positions, saying they had to be smart as a company and watch their bottom line. The eliminated positions and labor cuts caused associates to have to skip their breaks, managers in particular, and run departments with skeleton crews. After the cuts, the board members increased their salaries by 30 percent, took extravagant trips out of the country and bought new cars. After four years, Harmons finally gave their associates a cost of living increase, but they had to prove they were worth it before they got it. Harmons bases every promotion decision on the Simmons Survey, which breaks down a person's character. They have "Understanding Character" classes for a few chosen (not all leaders of the company get this privilege). The core group of leaders that have the opportunity to grow go on trips "retreats" all over the country (they recently went to Germany) to understand, well - character. Harmons transfers associates on a regular basis without warning or consent. They create new positions without providing adequate training, only to turn around and eliminate the positions, and then create new ones.

Need a Mission Statement Refresher Course

Pros

There are some really incredible people who pour their hearts into their work. It was wonderful and refreshing to work with people who truly had a passion for what they were doing. Honest attempts at providing the best quality and service were strived for on a daily basis. Harmons is committed to supporting local organizations and has an amazing customer base that consistently supports fundraising efforts.

Cons

The feeling of big corporation is pushing out the first line and embodiment of the mission statement - "To value our associates . . . " A lot of associates have been experiencing the feeling of not being valued and a clear shift in company culture over the past couple years. Not giving raises or increases for more than 4 years yet expecting more results puts additional pressure on already stressful positions. Many people stay in those positions because of their commitment and loyalty to the company, but if the lack of feeling any real value continues a lot of great people will be lost to better opportunities. Morale also plummets when people are transferred so frequently and dropped from growth and development tracks without explanation.

Pros

Hard work is rewarded. Promotions are possible. Stores are clean and a lot of money goes back into remodeling stores.

Cons

You have to beg and ask for raises after getting 1 or 2. Not a long term company to work for like it used to be. The company has got so big that it's all about profits and cutthroat business style. They are always changing and cutting job titles, salaries and positions.
