Pros

I've been at HBP for over 20 years and the main reason I've stayed is the people and the mission. There aren't too many companies where you are able to contribute something meaningful and get to work with great people.

Cons

As we have gotten bigger, there are more opportunities but it doesn't have a small company feel anymore

Thank you for your feedback. We agree in that our people are certainly one of the greatest things about our organization. As we grow, we aim to retain the best elements of the small company dynamic while adapting to the best elements of a larger organization, which can be challenging.

Great People and Great Work/Life Balance

Pros

The people: for the most part, employees care about contributing meaningfully, respect opinions of others, and collaborate well. The culture: work/life balance is excellent, including things like (manager-dependent) working from home, being able to 'shut off' at the end of the day (and not checking email at all hours), and early releases on Fridays during the summer. The mission: what we do has an opportunity to impact a lot of people, and our solutions are pretty awesome. The work: HBP is always trying new ways of working, so even if you're in the same role-ish for a bit, that role will change and expand. You are also in a position to drive your own work; people are very open to input and management generally responds well to people who take initiative, as long as it aligns with overall goals and expectations.

Cons

Career paths and promotions are challenging, because there are a lot of senior employees and people stay for decades. Like lots of other orgs, your role is highly dependent on your manager. Most managers are pretty fantastic, but not all; can be tough to side-skirt a difficult boss. Not an overly social company - people tend to hit the road to the suburbs at the end of the day. Can be very meeting-heavy and consensus-driven, leading to slower decisions in favor of protecting the brand (understandably).

Thank you for providing us with this feedback! It is great to hear that you see the value in our mission and have had the opportunity to evolve in your role. Given the flat organizational structure, vertical mobility isn’t always clearly defined. That said, we support career growth through expansion within a role and encourage managers to work with their employees to identify new opportunities. If you have any additional feedback you’d like to share, please reach out to us at feedback@harvardbusiness.org.

Pros

In the 30 years I worked in the training industry before coming to HBP, I never experienced a work environment so supportive of developing its own people while delivering the highest quality of development to others. Another factor that impresses me with HBP is how the leaders take a long view in addressing change. Because the leadership team is very engaged with clients and able to sense early signals of the need to change, they avoid having to take drastic short-term measures to turn around problems. Instead, they take a measured approach to prevent performance crises in the business. It's exciting to see all the possibilities in HBP's future and know that there's a well-thought out plan for transforming visions into realities to continue to fulfill the mission of helping leaders become better at what they do in a complex world.

Cons

The cons are what you experience at any company, we can't do everything people would like us to do in the time they'd like us to do it.
