Pros

There's a lot I could say about working at Catalyst, but the biggest thing to me is that my spouse and children tell me they never want me to leave. It is amazing to feel like I'm a meaningful part of a company doing meaningful things with an excellent business outlook, and to simultaneously have such a great work/life balance that my family notices and cares. The transparency exercised by everyone from executive leadership down to mid-level managers is amazing, and helps us all feel like we have ownership in the process. Catalyst isn't perfect, just like every place there are decisions that aren't perfect, culture that can vary slightly based on managers, but the transparency that exists makes it so we can understand that the overall direction the company is headed, warts and all, is something I want to be a part of for a long time to come.

Cons

Catalyst continues to grow and has some corresponding growing pains. Cohesion and consistency across teams can vary. I've had friends who came to work here who didn't have an experience as positive as mine, which I attribute to differences in culture between individual teams. We have had several reorgs over the last couple years. They have inevitably involved some bumps and bruises. Change is painful though, and I can look back and see the reasoning behind the reorgs, along with benefits that have come from them.

Thank you for this thoughtful and detailed review. I'm so glad to hear that your family wants you to stay at Health Catalyst! You and they are part of the Health Catalyst family, and we're so grateful to have you as a colleague! We'll continue to strive to maintain transparency and mission-orientation in the months and years ahead. I appreciate your feedback regarding some of our growing pains, including challenges related to organizational changes. We recognize the pain associated with these changes, and are trying to minimize those changes wherever possible, while still being responsive to a dynamic and high-growth market situation. Pros

Incredible benefits all around. Their employees are number one priority (at least it seems that way). Very fair and competitive compensation. Anyone work remotely.

Cons

A long to commute to an office that's not in a convenient location.

Thank you for your feedback and for your review. Grateful to hear of the positives you've experienced, including the sense that you as team members are our #1 priority. This is how I feel. Also happy to hear you feel good about our compensation approach and remote flexibility. Thanks also for your feedback on our SLC office location. We're kicking off a review shortly of where we might consider locating starting at the beginning of 2021. We'll solicit input from every SLC team member as part of that process. Also, our education assistance program enables team members to pursue a broadly defined set of educational opportunities, and we encourage every team member to tap into these experiences, working with your manager to enable this to occur. Thank you again for your review and for your contributions to Health Catalyst! Best, Dan

Pros

I ran into some issues with the infertility benefit where the uninsured, cash-price for some necessary medications was $4,500. Aetna charged us $12,000 (267% more than someone without insurance). I took the issue to HR and we fought them for months without success. I finally met with our CEO personally and explained the issue, and he enlisted our CPO, who in turn put Health Catalyst's insurance broker on the case. The issue was solved in a couple of weeks, and we ended up paying a few hundred out of pocket. A few things I want to point out here. 1) An Infertility benefit is rare, but they stand behind it and will do what it takes to deliver on that benefit. 2) HR was immediately available and happy to help, and worked with us for a long time trying to solve the issue. 3) Our CEO (who runs a large company with many hundreds of employees) was willing to meet with me personally, listen carefully, and promptly engage valuable company time and resources to solve the problem of one employee. There have been a couple instances of team members passing away, and leadership has reached out personally to the families and offered continued salary, benefits, and tuition assistance until they get back on their feet. Yes, the benefits are world-class, but I place an even higher value on compassionate leadership. I know they've got my back.

Cons

From a technical perspective, there needs to be more emphasis and drive to scale horizontally rather than vertically. I believe there are some stacks/apps that do, but generally speaking there needs to be a broader initiative and drive to scale out rather than up. I think there is some momentum building around that, but there will come a day where we'll have some significant growing pains if we don't start tackling the issue now.

Thank you for sharing this review and this personal experience. I remember our discussion, 1:1, and I'm so glad you reached out to me, and so grateful that we were able to resolve this issue. Team members are my #1 priority, and they are the #1 priority of our leadership team, and every team member, at some point, will need our personal interaction and help, and we hope every team member will feel that they can reach out when that help is needed. Even more so, we hope that every team member will be supported and loved by their direct supervisor in extraordinary and consistent ways, and that those managers feel deeply supported by me and other members of the leadership team in advocating for our team members. I also appreciate your feedback regarding horizontal integration and scale, and I agree with this perspective. I'm excited to see some meaningful innovations coming horizontally at the platform layer and at the apps layer, and believe we'll see more of this focus in 2020 and beyond. Thank you again for your thoughtful review and for your contributions to the company's success! Best, Dan
