Thank you for providing feedback on your work experience with Horizon Hobby! It is nice to hear you developed relationships that will last a lifetime. It is no surprise that great Horizonites become great friends! We also appreciate your suggestions regarding communication and investment in technology. Horizon strives to provide open-door opportunities for direct communication at all levels, but proactively facilitating communication is important, too, and is something we need to encourage. As for technology, we are committed to remaining an industry leader, and work hard to properly prioritize our investments in development. Thanks again for submitting a review on Glassdoor. We hope you remain a friend of Horizon for life!

Pros

I have worked at Horizon Hobby for 9 years. The only reason that I am leaving is to fulfill my hearts desire and become a stay at home mom. Horizon has given me great opportunities to grow and perfect my job functions and to grow as a leader. I am passionate about the work that I do and Horizon has always recognized that. I have been fortunate to work with talented team members that really take initiative to continuously complete projects. I have been able to work with a dedicated IT team that blow me away with their knowledge. However, the greatest benefit to me is their flexibility with work/life balance. It will definitely depend on where you work, but on my team, we were conscious of the fact that people work best when they have a good work-life balance. There were definitely moments of panic inducing late night projects, but the majority of the time, our work was nicely balanced with our family time.

Cons

I believe that Horizon has some of the normal growing pains of a company that grew very quickly. I would love to see more training opportunities. I think that new managers need more leadership training and there should be ongoing training for experienced managers. However, I love that Horizon promotes from within. Bravo. Also, if you are one of those people that think no one should work on Thanksgiving or Black Friday, then this isn't the place for you. We are a retail focused company and THE BIGGEST day of the year for most retailers is Black Friday. Tie your boots tight because the holiday season is the time where everyone needs to buckle down and get the work done.

Congratulations on your opportunity to fulfill your dream! We certainly respect your decision to be a stay-at-home parent. While we are always sad to see such highly satisfied, motivated Horizonites leave, we are pleased you found work-life balance while you were employed at Horizon. Horizon is lucky to have very dedicated, highly effective employees who do a great job of taking care of business when it is mission critical, yet keep their personal lives a priority. In return for their flexibility in meeting the business needs, we try to offer flexibility (as you mentioned, it varies by each department's responsibilities). Everyone wins! Of course, the close relationships between teammates helps make it work, too. Thank you for your feedback about leadership development. That is certainly an area of continuous growth--nobody ever "graduates" and becomes the perfect leader. We hope to put more emphasis on ongoing training opportunities. Comments such as yours reinforce how important it is to make this an area of focus. Enjoy living the dream! If/when you decide to work outside of the home again, we hope to hear from you!

Pros

Horizon provides fair benefit packages to employees. Yearly performance review is given on time. They provide training and tools for employees to be able to do their jobs.

Cons

Top management executives can't hear/see the employees at the remote branches. A lot of corporate functions are centralized in headquarters, that Horizon can't keep or hire good people.

Thank you for your review, and thank you for your contributions to Horizon Hobby. We appreciate your positive comments about our benefits--we work very hard to make sure our total rewards program is structured to attract and retain top talent. I'm glad the resources and coaching you received were favorable as well. As a global company with multiple sites in the United States as well as around the world, it is difficult for top executives to visit all locations on a regular basis. That's why our CEO makes it priority to attend quarterly meetings open to all employees in each of our U.S. markets to stay in touch. Based on your feedback, we will discuss other ways we can encourage communication to bridge the gap between those meetings. Again, we appreciate you taking the time to review Horizon Hobby on Glassdoor. Thank you for your many years of service, and best of luck in your future endeavors.
