Pros

Incredible sense of transparency... The company LIVES by the Culture Code... It's not just a marketing stunt. Everyone has incredible passion and love for the company. They genuinely want to help and do the best they can to make HubSpot's users successful and in turn, make HubSpot successful. Team independence is awesome as well. You don't get buried by processes... move fast, ship it and measure!

Cons

A few growing pains... Nothing out of the ordinary but super interesting time to be a part of the company if you're OK with change. Salaries can be a bit lower and the benefit packages less than a major corporation... but every company has it's give and take. Salary might be a bit lower but you get a whole lot of culture and excitement in your day-to-day which more than makes up for it in my opinion.

Thank you for taking the time to write this up and share your feedback, and for helping us build a product our customers love. I like that you call out the technical reasons engineers often enjoy working here, along with some of the softer stuff like coffee and snacks. We're grateful you chose to work here and I really appreciate you taking the time to write this up and share your feedback. Sincerely, Katie

Pros

HubSpot is tremendously transparent internally and owns that 'T' in the culture deck. Hand-in-hand with the transparency, many challenges/opportunities are available for anyone in the company to take initiative on. Moreover, I've always felt that I have the autonomy to manage my work schedule and design my own approaches to solving problems. The people of color culture is great, and it's fantastic to see enough people who truly gets it and care about it enough to push through with many initiatives to drive D&I.

Cons

The compensation is considerably lower than market value, and raises will get you stuck perpetually in catch-up mode because they're positioned as % raises. As HubSpot has grown, I have felt the business > team > individual paradigm of "use good judgment" erode. Now it feels more like team > individual > business. More time is spent "talking about talking" to see which team gets the credit rather than simply doing a piece of work that benefits the business. Team priorities are set up similarly so forget about helping another department with something quick (even if it takes <1 hr and has a high impact on the business) because "it's not on the roadmap". The only ways to overcome this has been to either positioning the ask so they see what's in it for them or going to upper management. I've seen many top, A-level people leave as a result of either compensation or bad management, reducing them from someone who was tremendously helpful to others to having to deal with politics and become jaded.

Thanks for taking the time to write this up--it's got a lot of rich feedback we can learn from, so appreciate you taking the time to share it. We actually spend a fair amount of time on both comp and identifying top performers (it's part of the reason that we introduced the Fellows program and run it, and have introduced programming to expose top performers to more of our leadership, even up to the board level), so it's definitely something we spend a lot of calories working on, but it doesn't sound like you have visibility into that context. Our goal on comp is to combine base pay and equity in a way that is compelling for folks, not in any way shape or form to create perks in place of fair comp. On the positive front, love that you called out how hard we are working on inclusion and the core focus on transparency. I appreciate the feedback to help us get better on the top performer clarity and comp--lots for me to think about, thanks for taking the time. Sincerely, Katie
