Pros

Benefits/ retirement / work from home / matches pension up to 3 %/ it’s a federal government job…. There’s not much more I can say for 20 words

Cons

Not enough training, they only care about you taking phone calls, performance monitoring/call monitoring/time monitoring with lack of training is a set of for disaster. Hours aren’t great. Takes along time to get your steps and grade. Not too much movement if you don’t want to be on the phones. No HR.

Pros

There is a lot of mobility in the agency right now. The hiring freeze has been lifted. My office has a laid back environment. No gossip or backstabbing. I work with great people. I take pride in what I do. I perform a necessary function in this country. You definitely will not be bored with this job. Flexi-place, telework eligible after the first year. Stability. The IRS isn't going anywhere; at least not in the foreseeable future. There is a lot of recruiting of "externals" - people who have not worked for the IRS or the government in general. Now is the time to get your foot in the door.

Cons

It took 10 years of working in a call site to finally get this opportunity. The job is extremely stressful. Too many cases; not enough people. The people with the most knowledge are leaving the workforce taking a wealth of information with them. Grade 7 are working Grade 11 cases because there are no Grade 9 cases. If you make it through the training year, it just gets harder because your inventory increases. People hate you. You aren't popular at parties. You will never catch up. Get used to it.
