Pros

+ Mission-driven healthcare; work feels impactful in a positive way + Bright and easy to work with engineering peers with collaborative culture, even in a remote environment + Good work life balance + Diverse and welcoming environment. Above average in this respect when compared to engineering departments at many other tech companies. + Management feels open to feedback

Cons

We are still recovering from a merger between two companies that had many differences in engineering culture, GTM strategy, and products. This led to growing pains and some controversial product decisions, and the impact still remains today with issues like tech debt and overall alignment of the company. It appears that things are improving in these respects, but only time will tell if that ends up being the long-term trajectory.

Thanks for highlighting so many of the elements that make Included a mission-driven community of truly great people. The merger did come with lots of change, but we're glad to hear you've seen improvement - our leaders are focused on change management and making sure we continue to strengthen our Included Health processes.

An opportunity for impact

Pros

Included Health is at the sweet spot for engineers looking to make an impact. It's big and mature enough that we're not frantically pursuing product market fit and adding to our tech debt, but it's small enough that there are many opportunities to make a foundational contribution to how the product and the engineering team work into the future. The management team encourages and supports growth and ownership for ICs, and there are plenty of mentors and role models to learn from. Leadership is solid and very open to interaction at every level; leaders and teams have office hours where you can talk to them about anything with high psychological safety. The company believes in its mission and lives its values more authentically than anywhere else I've been. For a remote-first company it has a pretty strong culture that manifests in a lot of good ways.

Cons

As a scaling startup which is still integrating after the merger of two similarly sized companies, there is a lot of tech debt and remediation work to do. Some parts of the development process are pretty rough, and some teams feel a lot of tension between needing to implement features and needing to pay down tech debt. The model of team ownership of services means there are no DevOps or QA teams to throw things over to for testing and operations work, which may appeal to some people but be unpleasant for people who want to focus 100% on coding. Historically, roadmaps and medium-term plans have been unreliable, but that seems to be changing.

Thank you for sharing these insights; you highlight key elements of our impact-driven work and the opportunity to solve intersting problems as part of the Tech team. You've also noted some of the very real challenges we've experienced from merging, and now scaling as one company. We lean into our Included Health value of "We Value Change" to navigate them while also investing in our processes and roadmaps in order to set a stronger path forward.
