Tone Deaf Leadership & Toxic Work Culture

Pros

They throw huge parties for all staff and are well known in the Bay

Cons

Institute on Aging is one of the worst run nonprofits I've ever worked at in my 20 years of nonprofit experience. Communication between senior leaders and the actual workforce is disconnected and leadership is only interested in solving problems with easy solutions. All other issues are dismissed, saying employees are complaining and don't understand the issue they are advocating for. The culture does not encourage direct feedback and transparent communication, and people of color experience racism and microaggressions daily. Internal promotions are the lowest I've ever seen, and IOA does nothing to support their employees in being prepared for the next promotion. Internal applicants are often ridiculed and rejected, often discouraging them from ever applying again. Turnover is high, employees don't feel supported, and any complaints are handled at very low priority. Culture at IOA is built by good department heads, otherwise it is nonexistent. This company spends money recklessly and then when the budget is down employees are laid off.

Pros

IOA is a great place to serve the community and gain useful skills in public health.

Cons

Because it is a non-profit, there are limitations to it's resources that make innovation difficult at times.
