Will You Be The Next Diversity Hire to Fire?

Recommend

Business Outlook

Pros

They sure know how to gaslight you through your training and at conferences on how great it is to work for them. They dangle a banana in front of your face of a competitive package you can get AFTER a tenured period of time that requires you to do others jobs just to have SOME recognition, but never to promote you.

Cons

This company totes how advanced they are and inclusive, but has exhibited time and time again that they do not genuinely care about their employees. From hiring and firing diversity hires, mismanagement of time and respect of surgeons in the OR, and the unorganized growth and development for new employees is incredibly lacking compared to other large companies. On top of this, the pay range is behind on times and the benefits package is subpar to working at a fast food chain. This company has the ability to be greater and better but instead exploits their people for leaderships personal gain. Interacting with some leadership, you can see that there are some moral gaps and cover ups. The worst part about all that I’ve said is that there is a receipt for every single grievance and yet the company will prioritize lies, covering for their own, and finding ways to terminate anyone who is not a white male or female. Do not recommend ever working for this company — which will soon be out competed by more robust and modern technologies soon. It’s unfortunate the mediocrity of those that are in leadership positions & you wonder how they got there.

Pros

Industry-leading technology that is genuinely changing surgery. Strong brand recognition in robotic surgery and minimally invasive procedures. Unique exposure to the operating room and direct interaction with surgeons and hospital teams. High-performing culture with ambitious and capable peers. Long-term career potential and compensation can be strong for those who perform well.

Cons

The experience can vary significantly depending on the manager and territory team. When leadership and teammates are highly involved in training and development, the ramp can be manageable. When that support is limited, the role becomes much more difficult to navigate. (Ensure you have a competent manager and a supportive team. If not, you’ll be isolated and struggling, eventually facing criticism for your lack of performance. ) Performance expectations can escalate before many new hires feel fully confident in the role. The product already has very high market penetration in many hospitals, which makes it harder for newer team members to practice and develop their skills. A lot of time can be spent in the OR mainly observing or covering cases rather than actively getting hands-on experience.

Pros

Cafeteria is above average Good people with cool interests Lots of bathrooms Lots of lab space and great selection of tools Great internal training for career development Decent work life balance when things aren’t on fire. Really cool stuff and tech

Cons

Very cliquey. Very clear social hierarchy. If you’re not on the team when previous or current gen product development, you’re a second class citizen to do what the OGs don’t want to do or mess that they created. Company tries to be run at a fast pace like a typical Silicon Valley company but has none of the agility required. Lots of internal system slowing stuff down. Suppliers and vendors could care less to help you because volume is so low. But in meetings engineers are expected to have response in a day. intuitive just isn’t Apple. But there are plenty of ex Apple employees that will proudly proclaim that back at Apple things could’ve been done in 30 min or yesterday. I wonder why they left Apple and came here if they were so great at Apple? Maybe they’re here to save us? lol Very non inclusive like I mentioned and very obvious preferential treatment. Some people can go to meetings with no major updates for weeks while some have to have an update every hour. If you’re sick because of your kid is sick. And you take 2-3 sick days, your boss will ask “you seem to be sick a lot, why is that?” And he will never bother to ask if you’re doing better. Just did you do this yet? What’s taking so long? (When he asked 30min ago) Overall very toxic environment with a lot of nice language and advertisement to cover it up.

Toxic work place

Business Outlook

Pros

Overall pay is decent if that's all you need, and you get to see new places travelling. Great product for patients.

Cons

On boarding experience with the HR team was a mess. HR had absolutely no idea what is going on. For example, I was rejected 1 day, but then sent an email the next day to prepare for a director presentation, and emailing them for response goes no where. No feedback was ever given in the interview process, although promised. Management had poor communication. The level of disorganization is just a big red flag. Training was not what was explained, a lot of "on the fly" learning. They keep hiring for experience and are letting real talent quit/leave by their own doing.

Pros

The da Vinci is a powerful robotics platform and still unmatched by just about everything else in the market. With the product that great comes the experience and access to work with healthcare professionals and hospital systems at a level that is extremely valuable for a long career Medical Device. Also, the value you provide in the technical experience, the training pathway and the Surgeon learning curve to autonomy and the feeling of growing production is great when all the pieces fall into place.

Cons

If you're in an area that has good runway and they just need hands on deck with a supportive manager it's pretty straightforward career progression. However, there's a lot of territories that have been sold into a corner of sorts and because of the specific targets that absolutely need to be sold the management has gotten extremely picky and will specifically target reps from orgs such as JnJ, Applied and Medtronic to come in and flip the remaining surgeons that they've already been selling to.

Pros

My experience with Intuitive Surgical offered several notable advantages. The company’s innovative technology and cutting-edge products create a dynamic environment with immense potential for growth and continuous learning. Their training program is one of the most comprehensive I’ve encountered, equipping employees with the tools and knowledge needed to succeed. Additionally, the compensation and benefits package is highly competitive, which reflects their investment in attracting top talent.

Cons

However, my experience was also marked by significant challenges, particularly related to company culture and leadership. While Intuitive outwardly promotes values of diversity and inclusion, I found a lack of genuine support and accountability behind the scenes. In some instances, management failed to address discriminatory behavior, and leadership often lacked transparency and follow-through. The culture, at times, felt disingenuous and unsupportive, making it difficult to trust those in leadership roles or feel truly valued within the organization

Pros

* High quality and interesting engineering products/projects which meaningfully improve people's lives and health * Competitive compensation, particularly in the healthcare technology sector * Highly qualified and intelligent employees who are great to work with * Good benefits and perks: nice cafeterias, frequent corporate sponsored events, "collegial" feel * Programs and support for career advancement and training (conferences, selective corporate programs, career coaching, etc) * High ownership environment: sink or swim

Cons

* Intense and unreasonable (changing) targets which are not adequately supported (managerially, financially, and logistically) * Questionable ethics (with regards to employee evaluations, expectations and relations): works very well for individuals with a certain personality -- highly optimistic, "yes sir", done matters more than whether it was done well, those who are highly confident (ie those who do not take personal accountability) * Significant barriers for career advancement & leveling
