Pros

Good for college/high school students, and good if you like working with kids.

Cons

This is not a job for anyone who is hoping to land real photography jobs in the future. There is no room for creativity in this job. I applied to this job looking for experience in my field which is hard to do in a city with little opportunities. This job is not at all what I was expecting. Every photo session has a series of poses that the photographer must follow and send to corporate for review. If your photos do not meet corporate standards you will get a low “photography score” which affects the company. If you take really good pictures and love working with lighting and making actual art, don’t work here. there is little room for creativity and no room for growth.

Pros

1. Fun working with families, children, babies 2. Build photography experience 3. 20-25% Discount at JCPenney retail stores

Cons

1. You will be understaffed at all times because you wont have enough labor hours to give to your associates. 2. You have to run the studio at the same time as you manage your employees, grade photography, follow up with your superiors regarding several different numbers/performance reports 3. You must maintain a high sales average, but you also need to have a high number of sessions, so if you are low in sessions, you have to try to get pull-in sessions in the host store, which will drop your overall sales average. 4. The amount of labor hours you can spend on scheduling your employees is based on how many sessions you have and you are not allowed to exceed that pre-determined amount by more than 3%

Pros

Gain experience working with people in a creative way. Learn how to pose individuals and families. Sometimes you get to have fun with interesting items, poses, and creative ideas. Getting to show people who appear to have low self esteem how beautiful they really are in the photos is always a joy. And managing to capture great photos for people who clearly don't have the means to afford big, fancy sessions feels wonderful. There are ALWAYS coupons/groupons available for people to use to bring their costs waaaaay down.

Cons

Lifetouch is the parent company for JCP portraits and they have many rules that studio photographers have to follow when doing a session. They insist that sessions in the camera room only last 15 minutes and you are supposed to have your customers out of the studio and ready to view their photos by that time. The rest of the 45 minute appointment time is spent showing/selling the photos. JCP portraits works with newborns, unpredictable toddlers, surly teens, and grouchy adults. Trying to make special memories for these families is hard enough with plenty of time, let alone having to do it in 15 minutes.... Lifetouch also promotes employees pushing expensive products on customers. They want their employees to push their "media bundle" which is "normally $419, but now you can get it for just $259" on people and that can be frustrating to do when you, as the photographer, know the session wasn't a success. HOWEVER you do get a bonus if you manage to sell a media bundle to someone. They also make the photographers act as the sales associates and vice versa which is a lot to ask of someone who has back to back appointments scheduled. Management at our store was very poor. We had a young girl working with us, who wasn't the best photographer, but rather than take time to retrain her and work with her, the manager just stopped scheduling her, but didn't bother to tell her she was fired. That is completely unprofessional and just a terrible experience for a young person to have who was, most likely, working her first job. I also ended up finding out, through just regular conversation with coworkers, that I was being paid $1 less than everyone else. Yet I was the one who was always scheduled to work/called to come back in under the guise of "being the best photographer" or the "best sales person," but in reality I was really just the cheapest labor.
