Pros

The salary wasn't bad for being right out of school, and there are a few nice people on each team.

Cons

Communication was terrible, with an atmosphere that everyone was just trying to cover their own butts, rather than working together. Design trainees are lured down to Texas with the promise that after the six month trainee program (basically a full time design assistant position with the added pressure of extra 'trainee projects' which must be pitched to all the design directors for all the departments) there would be a full-time design position available. This is not the case, as trainees are let-go at about the 5th month of the program (so JCP won't have to pay taxes on you in the new year) and are expected to pay back the $2,000 moving bonus unless you've been with the company more than 1 year. They'll forgive the moving bonus if you sign a non-disclosure/non-defamatory contract. A neat little trick if you were not prepared to face the cost of moving again, paying back the original moving bonus and finding a new job on top of that and had an inclination to warn any of your friends/school programs that JCPenney plucked you from. While there are a few nice people at the company, most design trainees are paired with mentors who are overworked and uninterested in helping the newbie learn the ropes, not to mention untrained to handle the responsibility of helping the Design Trainee succeed with their trainee projects. It wasn't a complete bust though, as I learned to be a little more shrewd when selecting an employer, and only wish I had known in advance that they can most of their trainees so that I could've spent more time squirreling away my money rather than building a real life in Texas.

Pros

Great people, competitive pay, lots of corporate office amenities

Cons

With the declining corporate culture, frequent layoffs, reorganizations and reactionary environment, good people are feeling the oppressive weight of the challenges of the retail industry. A company that once care about its people has been forced to become more interested in the bottom line. Communication lines within the organization have suffered.

Pros

Building is nice and is being updated. Good benefits. Lots of amenities on site (gym, clinic, Walgreens, cafeteria, market shop, etc.) High quality staff depending on what department or group you are in. Very diverse culture. CEO is doing good work to reduce debt and keep the company moving forward.

Cons

You experience at JCP will be directly related to which group you work in. The .com team is virtually a separate entity and does what they want in the development cycle. Working with them is very difficult if you are not a part of their team. All most internal systems are integrated with .com, so the projects are very cumbersome to work through and complete. The review process is designed to assure most people are not rated high enough to get a raise. The focus during reviews is to focus on even the slightest perceived mistake to rate you lower than expected. Once that info is added, it is virtually impossible to get it changed, even with employee input. Directors and upper management is so busy that they have no direct view into what the line level employees are actually doing. Legacy IT systems are so customized that it almost impossible to update or replace them. The staff that supported these systems is gone, so there are no domain experts to assist. Because of the large debt burden on the company ($4b+), there have been ongoing layoffs. Every few weeks for the last year, we heard of people being laid off in various departments. 6000 people left in early retirement so that is more knowledge walking out. There is no on-boarding once you make it to your group. You are expected to be an SME in systems you have never had exposure to, with no training, or even a basic overview.
