Pros

I enjoyed working at JCP for over 14 years in IT because the people I worked with became my friends and we created a great team to get our projects done successfully. They are now trying to recover from the error of their ways (see Cons) and rebuild the JCP we all love both in the work environment and Retail stores.

Cons

They let new upper management change too many things and also eliminated the jobs of people that were a great asset to the company, including myself.

Pros

Excellent working environment, generous vacation (Home office), employee friendly. Adequate benefits. Through it's history, JCPenney has been way above average in how employee's are treated. Profit sharing was fair, and sometimes paid when no profit. The company was process-driven, which affords stability to employees. HR processes were satisfactory, job descriptions accurate. The company celebrated successes generously. The name has prestige.

Cons

Profitability inconsistent. They've been near bankruptcy in the past ten years, and may be headed there again. Have taken to laying off hundreds of employees (including me). IT area had to switch to cheaper offshore / outsourcing which reduced support from excellent to barely adequate. IT leadership is over-optimistic about the quality available from COTS and offshore contractors. This year will be a wild ride for employees, with failure very possible.

Pros

The coworkers you work with are great people. Most all do a good job of trying to meet the forced schedules and deadlines put upon everyone with the fast forward attitude in the home office. Often there is a lack of thought in the design of new applications because not enough people who understand the basics are involved in the early planning of new projects. When you attempt to put focus on this shortcoming it is "Oh yeah I agree and we'll work on it next time". But the next time it's the same old thing and work put out is OK, but could be a lot better.

Cons

Limited advancement/promotions these days. With the consolidation of all the job categories over the past five years there has been some promotions, but not like it use to be before. This places limits on those who would like to get ahead but don't get the opportunity. It gets frustrating to those who do a good job but don't feel they can advance, and thus they leave the company after a short time. Then the cycle begins again with new people who don't understand and those of us that have been around for some time end up having to retrain new ones all over again........it's a viscious cycle!
