Pros

I met some of the best people working at KIPP

Cons

Admin acts like they care about the well being of their teachers so you won’t quit. When first hire there was all this talk of mentorship, weekly checkins, setting the tone of the school. By the second and third month, multiple teachers quit and it was quite clear the students ran the school. Instead of set the tone of expectations with the students, admin repetitively came down on teachers. Even after several teachers quit, admin still refused to address the students. By the time we brought in the new year, students were having their bags searched at the door and being wand. Can you guess if the students ever got addressed?

Getting Better...

Pros

Competitive Salary (although it should be more considering the cost of living in DC, you're probably not going to find much better anywhere as a teacher)

Cons

Long work day hours 5-week Summer break Repetitive Professional Development - "Wellness Days = mandated attendance to overpaid outside speakers" Lots or performative actions and pandering rather than tangible things that directly address teacher concerns and input Diversity within executive leadership team leaves much to be desired

Not enough support for teachers

Business Outlook

Pros

Great compensation, and amazing co-workers that will go out of their way to support you.

Cons

Administration is not supportive with behaviors in the classroom. Students will disrupt the learning environment and be sent back 5 minutes later to do the same thing. The hours are very long and it is hard to have a life outside of work. Also there is not enough personnel in the building to support teachers. If someone is out and there is no sub to cover, admin will divide classes up and give other teachers 10 extra students to add to the already large class sizes. It can be very difficult to get a 2 minute bathroom break because you are in the classroom all day without support.
