Pros

This is an organization that does what it sets out to do: Improve the educational equity in LA. I love the people I get to work with on a daily basis. They're so passionate about our students and their futures. Collaboration is a key to your success at KIPP. If you're an independent operator, this isn't the place for you. This leads to the inclusion of ideas and innovation throughout our schools and regional office. The work that we do... requires rethinking about how we define what "work" really is. But in the end, this experience has been the most fulfilling I've ever had in my professional career thus far. Seeing the success of our students is what drives me. I'm so excited to wake up every day to experience the joy of our students achieving the best of what's possible in their lives.

Cons

If you're not compelled by the mission of the organization, the workload will burn you out very quickly. KIPP (not just LA) expects folks who are driven by the impact of its students. Promotions do not happen overnight. It's an extremely tedious process that is not clearly laid out to all employees, which leads me to believe office politics have a play into who gets promoted and who doesn't. If you're looking to be a leader, they expect you to do the work of a leader before even giving you the promotion. Of course, this also would mean you do the work of a leader with a low non-leader salary.

Pros

KIPPLA pays its teachers really well compared to LAUSD. Also, KIPP Scholar Academy is able to attract a great, diverse faculty.

Cons

KIPP Scholar Academy has the absolute worst administrative team I have ever encountered. They have no true behavioral management systems in place and attempt to manage their students' behavior by yelling and physically intimidating them. The school's chaotic culture breeds disrespect towards teachers and prevents rigorous learning. If you walk through the school hallways, all you hear are overwhelmed teachers yelling at students and trying to maintain order in their classrooms. Academics are not a priority at this school and they have extremely low academic expectations. In the 2014-15 school year: 3 of their teachers resigned midyear. 50+ students withdrew from the school midyear About 25% of their staff are not coming back next school year.

Don't do it

Pros

Above average pay and benefits Working with most students is fun

Cons

Cons 1) Overall: If you are a man this org is not for you. I have never worked in such a toxic work environment. 2) Work environment: All 3 new Black employees this year are quitting, and multiple male employees have complained to admin about gender discrimination. The CEO and exec board spend money on quarterly corporate events to get people to forget about the overwork and low salaries. You are paid below LAUSD, work longer hours, and are assigned tasks that would be multiple jobs in a public school district (lunch duty, arrivals and departures, weekly presentations, etc.). Feedback is not anonymous and they don't tell you when they are evaluating you (i.e., they could say they're coming to assist with a disruptive student but write down notes saying you can't run your classroom). 3) Curriculum: stale, not culturally relevant. Everything is tied to tests and they don't let you innovate. 4) Gender equity: There is favoritism for girls over boys. Boys are sent home/yelled at for cussing at teachers, but girls can do the same and more without anything happening to them.
