Pros

Kaman Aerospace is constantly hiring, because they are constantly understaffed. Pay is about minimum they can get away with for the positions, but it is a job. There is always work to be done. Great for go-getter types or people who can't sit still behind a desk all day.

Cons

Pay is minimal for a direct hire position ($45k for a starting engineer), but Kaman will pay upwards of $60 an hour for a contractor who can walk away at any point in time. Raises are few and far between, often late, and I have heard at most 1.5%. Management can be very confusing; much time was spent going back and forth on petty issues.

Pros

They have a couple high performing business units that keep the main part of the business (aerospace) afloat. Good job security. There are a lot of employees that have been here forever (35+ years).

Cons

Excessive management structure for the size of the company. Limited growth potential. If hiring on, get as much as you can up front because promotions and raises come very slowly if at all. A very stagnant organization. I expected more opportunities with the large number of older workers retiring, but when they replace someone they tend to go outside the organization. Even though they say otherwise, management has a hard time seeing you as anything other than your current position.

Company outlook is terrible...

Pros

Unfortunately, there isn't much left that the company has going for it at the Bloomfield Headquarters.

Cons

Lack of sustainable work and inability to win new contracts because of an aging and very expensive workforce will eventually lead to the closing of the CT Composites and MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) divisions at the Bloomfield Campus. The total disconnect between management and non-management has led to a void of meaningful communication and understanding between the two groups. This, in turn, has cultivated an atmosphere of discontent amongst non-management personnel and a feeling that management is dismissive of their needs and opinions or even that management simply doesn't care. Lastly, the two divisions are running on a skeleton workforce where the average employee's age is over 50 and most of those employees have been with the company for at least 10 years! While some people may find this a "pro", in the manufacturing industry - where contracts usually go to the lowest bidder - an old workforce is actually a hindrance to winning new long-term work!
