Pros

Please note that Kemper HR solicits reviews from all new employees after they've been with the company a few weeks. They email you requesting that you leave a review on Glassdoor, then reply back with a link to the review to show that it's been completed. No pressure, right? There's a reason that there are so many positive reviews from employees who have been there less than a year. The few pros for working at Kemper: -The people were friendly, smart, and capable (though their potential was tragically hobbled by poor leadership and direction). -The pay was competitive. -Matt Hunton, President of Kemper Auto, was the best senior leader I've ever worked for, hands down. He has the incredibly rare trifecta of strengths; He's academically intelligent, deeply understands business, AND he really understands people. He's approachable and genuinely values feedback. Unfortunately, his vision/values for the organization will never be realized due to truly awful leadership below him.

Cons

This place is a disaster. They had their first engagement survey in 2021, and it was so bad that they JUST DIDN'T SHARE THE RESULTS!!. (Leaders at VP and above were shown a high-level snapshot during a meeting, and nothing else was ever spoken about it.) -There are few women in leadership positions, and "surprisingly," they all seem to be being laid off instead of male counterparts. Women are routinely dismissed/marginalized, with opportunities and promotions going to men. I've worked in insurance 20 years, and never experienced anything like that. A brave male coworker actually suggested that my poor treatment was probably because I'm a woman. -No one has what they need to do their jobs well. - Work was an endless series of fire drills, everything urgent, direction constantly changing. Activity was prioritized over effective strategy, at the expense of business results. -Systems and processes are absurdly complicated or non-existent. -The company is struggling financially, and CEO Joe Lacher is arrogant and condescending as he steers the ship toward the iceberg.

Pros

Most of your co-workers will be good people. They are willing to assist within the best of their abilities and are just trying to get the job done. The health insurance is affordable. The 401K match is average.

Cons

The company is cheap with their first line employees. You can do everything right, make all the metrics and still get 1% raise for the year. If you decide to work here, negotiate a high starting salary, because you may be there for a while. No performance bonuses. Very little effort to motivate or retain employees. If you have previously worked at an insurance company where they gave you appreciation gifts like company T-shirts or office lunches, don't expect that at Kemper. Don't even expect a "good job" email. Staffing is run on a shoestring. The workload is so heavy to begin with that when someone goes out on leave or quits (and this happens a lot), their claims are reassigned and everyone is beyond overwhelmed. This causes more adjusters to go out on leave or quit. Customers complain that there have been so many different adjusters on their claim. It will not be possible to do all your work by their deadlines, but they won't take this into account when they do quality audits. Claims systems/resources are difficult to use. The different insurance companies acquired by Kemper still have their own systems and procedures. So you have to keep track of several different systems, resources and processes for each different company. Some systems are old and it's hard to find anything. You may also be working several different states.

Pros

None what so ever, ever

Cons

They will overwork you when you do a good job and put a target on your back. You will have expectations and once you reach them they say sorry and just raise the bar on you. Some managers during covid will go to Florida or other destinations, Tarpon fishing, fly fishing and never be available you name it and will keep you handcuffed to your chair complaining abut your results. It is who you know buddy club and no matter how hard you work you will be the slacker in their minds. My manager was never even available and when you called him you got voice mail has not been set up yet. You may have skills you can bring to the company and they have no interest, you are a vacuum cleaner salesman from the 1950's and even pit you against your coworkers like it is a horse race. They do all substandard insurance and their management is substandard and to them they could go to any fast food drive thru window and ask do you need a job and you are replaced. If you feel you have skills to bring to an organization they will purposefully table them so they can control you. They do not want expertise but numbers or you are gone, however once you reach the numbers as mentioned they just up them. The management is a click and I would have loved to have access to their numbers but you are nobody to this company no matter how hard you work and they just think recycle them for another. This company will be the most toxic environment you have ever experienced.
