Pros

The job is what you make it! I love having a lot of structure in my classrooms and the first 5 minutes (I think 30 seconds) of each period will determine the behaviors you see. Each campus is different, so you have to adjust to what works. But kokua is super flexible with scheduling which is what I love about them.

Cons

Any downside to kokua is just a downside of working with schools. There are breaks (Christmas break, spring break) which you will have to adjust financially to. Also sometimes I feel they might be over-staffed and there are no shifts to pick up for 1-2 weeks at a time. Felt like I needed a second more consistent job to make ends meet. Also half of the time you don’t know what age group you’re signing up for (I don’t mind it but some people really hate it.) IA the difference between kindergarten and 4th grade is huge. But I think this is more on the schools end than Kokua (I’m not sure).

Pros

Students, partners schools, connection create at long term assignments

Cons

There are rarely any assignments daily, from September-march I could pick up maybe 4 assignments but they were all 40+ minutes away. Really bad job security. Partner schools you sub at are amazing! No complaints. Had a huge hiccup when the new school year started because I was locked out of paylocity due to a contact information update and no one knew how to get me in, this caused a delay in pay for almost 1 month. Kukoa Management fired me after a mysterious no call no show, I never picked up an assignment for a particular day, I never got an email, phone call, text, or voicemail. In fact I was out of town this day but was made at fault since I didn’t put a non work day despite the mistake! They also could not provide me with proof. Again, every day I log in looking for an assignment and have picked up 4-5 in 6 months… that’s $500ish dollars y’all. I let them know of the mistake and communication errors was not given grace, I’ve never even been late. They also changed their pay from weekly to bi-weekly without notice! If your looking for a job to make money, do not depend on kukoa

Focused on skin color over performance

Pros

I cannot think of any

Cons

Hostile work environment for anyone without sufficient melatonin levels in their skin. If you appear to be white (even if you aren't caucasian!) you will be talked down to, held back from opportunities, dismissed by leadership, passed over for promotions, and generally treated as a second class citizen. It will be done openly and unapologetically.
