Pros

Corporate office in Irvine, CA has a good culture and the people are very friendly and you will learn a lot in the IT department. The IT department is a good fan of Microsoft products so you will have the opportunity to work on the latest Microsoft technology.

Cons

If you don't care about 401k, then work for LA Fitness. The company does not have 401K plan at all for their corporate employees and they have hard time attracting and retaining good employees because most candidates do care about 401k and they end up leaving the company. The company has high turnover due to lack of good benefits. All corporate employees are on hourly wages so they have to punch in / punch out. The company gives only 1 week vacation a year which is below the average in USA. The company gives only 6 paid holidays and those holidays are not paid if they fall on the weekend. The company does not give annual review. The company does not give annual pay raise at all so do not expect to get 2% pay raise. The hourly wage that you accept when they offer you the job will remain the same for years and most likely will not go up. Remember that you will be punching in / punching out because you will be on hourly wage not salary even if you are a professional working for corporate office

Pros

You get a free membership. Also immediate coworkers were cool but that's of course will vary based on location.

Cons

I was flat out lied to about payment. I was told I was being hired for Assistant Personal Training Director and would just have a "30 day training period". What that actually meant was that I was actually starting as a PTC (not the job I applied for) until I could basically prove myself worthy. Okay, would have been good to know but I will live. I find that about 2 weeks into the job tat not only have the bonuses been lowered from what I was told in my interview (I have a hard time believing that they were unaware of thus when hiring me), but also that my "base pay" was actually hourly minimum wage (again, fine but this was different from what I was told there would be a set base in my Interview). They also "forgot" to tell me that commission doesnt even begin to kick in until you've basically hit your minimum amount to bonus anyway. So basically, if you dont hit bonus, you're making $7.25/hour. That's it. The job is literally going around in the floor bothering people to buy training. And then watching your bosses lie to customers to get them to sign up, and then having to deal with their wrath. There is also NO sense of work life balance, as I frequently get calls and texts from my boss past 9 p.m. and on weekends (which I work most of anyway). Overall, they will day whatever they can to get you in the job and then leave you to fend for yourself. I have worked in gyms for years. I get it. But this is a terrible way to run business. Come to terms with the fact that this will be a stepping stone to gain sales experience, or run in the opposite direction.

Pros

Free gym membership, met some great people, opportunity to move up exists

Cons

Most of the reviews here are right on the money. LA Fitness is consistently ranked as one of the worst companies in the country to work for and it’s a shame because it doesn’t have to be. It could be a great company if it’s owners/CEO/corporate partners/shareholders concerned themselves a bit more with people and a bit less with padding their already very fat pockets. Biggest issues: -Lack of investment in their people. They ask a lot of their employees; sales and training managers and full time counselors work an insane amount of hours and are under a tremendous amount of pressure to produce. Operations staff are grossly underpaid and shoulder more than their fair share of the responsibility in running the club. All managers should be salaried, particularly because they work way more than their 40 hours and are constantly on call. You’re not eligible for benefits until you’ve been there for 12 months, which is just crazy, and they’re not very good. No 401K either, which is very telling about the life span they expect from their employees. No employee break area or back room, and no employee restroom. You have to go to the locker room with everyone else. It’s just not very employee-friendly. Also, there is a lack of training and growth is limited. You can move up but your individual talents are not appreciated. You can only move up through member services but if that’s not your bag, then you’re SOL. -Lack of investment in their facilities. At one time, LA Fitness clubs were considered state of the art. They have failed to keep up with technology and advancements in fitness. Most clubs still don’t have WiFi, they don’t have individual TV monitors on cardio equipment and in order to hear sound, you need an FM tuner. Who has one of those in 2018? Their app is terrible, the website is bare bones and their aerobics classes are wayyyyy outdated. They still have step aerobics classes. Step. Aerobics. Like, seriously, do they know what year it is? They charge enough for memberships to keep up with the latest trends in technology and fitness, and as the front line employees, we’re the ones that have to deal with the complaints about the lack of investment. All you can do is apologize and bubble it up but all feedback lands on deaf ears. This company is only concerned about making money. That comes at the cost of the happiness of their employees and the satisfaction of their members. No amount of money is enough compensation to deal with the daily frustration you will experience here. If you have any amount of management experience, do not take a position here. You’ll want to put your head through a wall after about 3 months. Keep it moving.
