Commitment to the community but not to career development
Pros
Company has a genuine commitment to giving back to the community and taking care of the planet. This commitment is part of the culture of the company. Employees love this part of the culture, and most employees are very proud to work for Levi's because of this commitment. Employees also love working for such an iconic brand. They produce a high quality product that is loved all over the world.
Cons
The culture of commitment to the community covers up serious business issues. There is very little career development or investment in human resources. Levi's answer to HR issues is to layoff their current people and hire from outside to replace whatever new skill they need. This creates a constant cycle of people in and out and an underlying fear of job insecurity. It's not a positive, motivating feeling that the hungry will survive. It's demoralizing because no one is guiding you on what skills you should be working to develop and there is no training for you to build your skill set so you can be part of taking the company to the next level. The apparel industry is hyper-competitive. This is a fact of life. Levi's has been stuck since the late 1990's because they don't invest in their people
